A meeting of the new Committee on Constitutional Revision, whose members are Dr. Uschold, Dr. Michael V. Haselswerdt, and Dr. Ralph P. Joly, will be held Nov. 12. Also included in the chairman's report were Senate election results. Dr. Richard J. Thompson was elected to serve for the remainder of- this year on the Senate, and Dr. Peter J. Galiewas elected to a three-year term on the Committee on Faculty Status. Area I, which involves the Departments of Physics, Biology, and Chemistry. A review of the General Studies area was also requested by Rev. James M. Demske, S.J., through Dr. Richard L. Uschold's chairman's report. The Educational Policies Committee, chaired by Dr. Larry E. Jones, is working on a core curriculum review, in order to formulate generic criteria on the area studies currently offered. The committee will meet sometime in November to review as was the introduction of a midterm course evaluation. Plans for a panel discussion on this topic remain tentative, due to the lack of student representatives. The Committee for Student Evaluation of Faculty will meet Nov. 27 to discuss the publicizing of the process of evaluation, and to clear up certain ambiguities that have surfaced. The possibility of standardizing the procedures of the deans' policies on confidentiality of evaluations was mentioned, centrated on the attitudes of students toward alcohol on campus, and the policy of the college regarding its liability on drinking. Laux's statement, or in tavor ot an addition. The Faculty-Student Liaison Committee spoke of plans for the panel discussion, Students and Alcohol on Campus, which was held Wednesday in the Student Center Lounge. Participants in the panel included Dean of Students Thomas Miller and ' Lee Fassl. The completion date is set as Spring 1980. The Educational Policies Committee will submit criteria it has formulated for each of the areas to the Faculty Senate for ratification Data in each of the seven areas will be compiled by each division head and submitted to the committee for review in the following procedure. First will be the review of the various statements which each academic department has submitted, regarding criteria for admission of courses in that area. Secondly, the committee will.use this statement to formulate a generic set of criteria governing the admission of courses in that area. The committee will also revise the courses currently being offered for area credit to determine their suitability for that area. Chairman Dr. Larry E. Jones stated that the purpose of such an investigation is to determine how well the curriculum is functioning after having been in existence for seven years and to identify problems that exist in the administration and implementation of the core. He stressed "The immediate task is not one of revision, but one of review." The Core, which was instituted in 1971-72, has never been made explicit nor formalized and according to the committee the vagueness of the core has led to a serious erosion in several areas. The Educational Policies Committee of the Faculty Senate is in the process of reviewing the Area Studies Segment of the Core Curriculum at Canisius College. by Wally Piotrowski Arnie Geisler presented his views of alcohol use as President of the Undergraduate Student Assembly. He said that last year, as Chairman of the Campus Programming Board, he noticed that social aspects of planning events were minimized. Events on campus he said, were often seen as "drinkoffs" by students. He said that alcohol is treated like «ex at times, in that confusing misinformation is often circulated. "I think what the school has to do is create an atmosphere where students will learn to use alcohol responsibly. We do not want to inhibit the social aspects of the college. We want to emphasize people in our planning rather than things." He noted that there are events on campus where the occasion and the people it serves are (continued on page 7) how to use alcohol. We have a problem when people are sick or miss classes from hangovers. We have a problem when there is damage to college property as well." f_ois Baker spoke on alcohol use on campus and if that use poses public relations problems for the college. "Canisius, is seen as a serious educational institution with a minimum of frivolity. We are not seen as a drinking school." She did note however that because Canisius does not have a reputation for alcohol abuse any incident that might occur as a result of alcohol would create a serious public relations problem for the school. Miller also stated that from an educational perspective there is an alcohol problem on campus in his view. "Students are learning Miller spoke first, addressing the general question of whether or not there is an alcohol problem on this campus. He noted that drinking at Canisius must be approached from two perspectives: liability of the college in the event of an aiconoi-reiated accident, and educational perspective as well. Miller noted that "Canisius remains liable for actions of its community, students, administration and faculty. I don't think the college is prepared to limit social use of alcohol or social functions on campus. We accept liability risk s and try to manage them." The forum was composed of a panel of student and administrative representatives. Lee Fassl, Director of Student Activities, acted as moderator for the event. Other panel members included Helen Farraro, Chairperson of the Campus Programming Board; Arnie Geisler, President of the Undergraduate Student Assembly; Lois Baker, Director of Public Information; and Thomas Miller, Dean of Students. by Melanie Gleaves The Faculty-Senate Liaison Committee presented an open forum on alcohol use and policy this Wednesday in the Student Center Lounge.
