Ferraro stated that "Dr. Miller hoped this group would recognize the Task Force, because we don't have any authority right now." The Task Force was formed by Dr. Thomas Miller, Canisius dean of students, as a result of the riot at last year's St. Bonaventure game and past problems at Niagara and St. Bonaventure games. Helen Ferraro, USA chairman, who is a member of the Task Force, presented the proposals to the Senate. by Jeanne Meyers The Undergraduate Student Assembly met Tuesday, November 11th and discussed the proposals made by the Little Three Basketball Task Force. This Force was originally designed to eliminate tensions at athletic events between Niagara University, St. Bonaventure and Canisius. c) Alcohol will be prohibited on public transportation to games. As far as obligations of the Host are concerned, Ferraro stated that "We (Canisius) have to abide by the rules that are set down at the Aud". Ferraro also stated that "We are going to talk to Dr. Starr, director of athletics, about seating arrangements." The other schools have expressed a desire to sit in a whole block instead of being dispersed throughout the Aud. Mascots and cheerleaders will be restricted to one end of the Aud, instead of being in front of the other team's spectators. - The Task Force also proposes hiring, through Dr. Starr, a group of students as liaison to take care (Continued on 5) Eight Jesuits Murdered; Church Reacts to Terrorism by Jim Bachwitz The lilyod of Martyrs is the Seed of Christians. mka Coach Claims Discrimination; C. Investigation Possible Field recently filed a suit with the Education Department, charging that Canisius was not meeting its obligations with regard to Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 which prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in institutions to provide "equal opportunity" for both men and women on the level of intercollegiate athletics. by Walter Hankin Canisius College could soon be the target of an investigation by the Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights, at least that is the word from Barb Field, head coach of the school's women's basketball team ■ ; , .V : 4 ■ ?. 0;! f^§| ' i I } X y|gJ| ; jB JBF w ' , ••§$ i \ • t [ j * # bv Jim Bachwitz With the murders of eight priests at the Jesuit University of Central America (UCA) In El Salvador over the last three months, the response of the Church has been one of outrage and disbelief, according to the last meeting of the U.S. Catholic Conference and Rev. James M. Demske, S.J., president of Canisius College. Demske stated that "it Is sobering to realize that Jesuits In other Jesuit Colleges throughout the world are losing their lives for their belief in social justice." _ j Demske is referring to the Jesuit involvement in the ciiil war which has plagued l I Salvadorfor the past year. According to the United Nations Newsletter "Center of Concern", 3,000 people have been killed In this war since January 1. Father Kelly, chairman of Religious Studies at Canisius, visited UCA in the summer of 1978, and explained how the college has come to expect attacks, such as bombings, with regularity, According tOsKelly, th& church in El Salvador promoted the idea that people should "direct their own lives " He went on to say that the land in the country was owned by ve|y few, with the majority of the people reduced to slavery. Archbishop Romero of El Salvador was very much involved in informing the people about the government, Kelly said. He ran the printing press and radio station at UCA which was the people's "greatest" source of information. Archbishop Romero was shot during a mass he was giving, and Kelley feels that it was "definitely a government job." The printing press was bombed later that month as was the radio station. The U.S. Catholic Conference gave a statement in "The New York Times'' that, "The Salvadoran church was under attack because It has embraced the pastoral task of accompanying the people In their struggle with their suffering." Father Ryan, executive vice president of academic affairs at Canlsius, said he is "most concerned", that the church is being harrassed by ultra-rightists, and that it is "being persecuted for standing for justl< e." In order to be in compliance with the "equal opportunity" standard of Title IX there must be equality In three areas. Those areas include: financial assistance granted to athletes, other athletic benefits and opportunities, and effective accommodation of student interest and abilities. The Title IX interpretation for compliance is specific with regard to men and women who participate within intercollegiate athletics. "If I felt everything was equal, i wouldn't have filed a suit," continued Field. "I can only speak for women's basketball, but it (the suit) does involve the entire women's program." The coach of the lady cagers does not feel, however, that the college is meeting the standards set forth by Title IX. "Canisius has not been officially notified, but a suit has been filed," Field said. "My reason for filing a suit does not reflect any bitterness toward Canisius College." Canisius has not yet received notification of the suit, and until It does Field is declining to divulge the basis of her complaint.
