450 spaces in the original lease from the Sears-Roebuck days, Franz stated. "Our contract with Uniland gives us 450 spaces in the ramp, and due to the way they (organized) the parking spaces on the top floor, we were getting more than 450," stated Dr. lawrence Franz, vice-president of business and finance and College treasurer. Seventy-seven student parking spaces on the second floor of the ramp were lost to Blue Cross employees. These spaces are located on the Jefferson Avenue side of the ramp. On Monday, Canisius students were no longer able to park on the second floor of the Blue Cross ramp, leaving only the third floor of the ramp available for student parking. by Valerie Latona We signed this contract for College loses Spaces In Ramp to Blue Cross Welcome Back . . . Current Campus Alcohol Policy To be Reviewed by Administrators Shawn Swanson '91 is "convinced" by the Convincer in the Student Center on Monday. The Convincer was brought to Canisius by the New York State Police Dept. in an effort to increase alcohol awareness on the campus. The members of the Task Force are John Bates '90, Michael Corkery '90, Anthony Costanzo '89, Patrick Dougherty '89, Karen Gisel '90, David Krohl '89, Anthony lana '89, Michael McCarthy '89, Lisa-Lee Pieri '90, Marie Ring '91, Lisa Rolf '89, Ken Rosko '89 and Matt Wawrzynski '89. Philliben will be accompanying six students on the Task Force to Chicago on Nov. 10-15 for the Bacchus Boost Alcohol Awareness Convention. Although last, week was Alcohol Awareness Week, Canisius did not sponsor any alcohol education programs. However, Philliben noted that a "convincer" was brought to campus to convince students to use their seatbelts. The New York State Police presentation included literature and a video on drinking and driving. In the Oct. 23 issue of the Buffalo News, Rissmeyer questioned, "What do you do in terms of alcohol education?" Dr. Miller also said that the alcohol abuse in Western New York is far greater than the national norm. "It's my impression that there is a considerable amount of drinking in Buffalo," Rissmeyer added. Rissmeyer, some students are unhappy living on-campus. 1985 Canisius graduate Mike Smrek (52) of the NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers stretches for a rebound over New Jersey Net Tim McCormick (right) during Monday's exhibition game in Memorial Auditorium. New Jersey's Buck Williams (left) is too late in boxing out Smrek, who played for the Griffs from 1981-85. (See story on page 12) Photo by yvonne badura There have been incidents of loud, drunken behavior in the residence halls, said Rissmeyer. For this reason, according to Kathryn Philliben, director of Residence Life, noted over 30 discipline cases in the residence halls of which half were alcohol related. In addition, she said three students were sent to the emergency room over the course of a weekend due to inordinate drinking. However, Rissmeyer denied that Canisius has an on-campus drinking problem. Rather, she stated that there are individuals on campus that have a problem with drinking. St. Mary's of South Bend, Ind., has a much more restrictive policy where students of legal drinking age cannot possess alcohol in the presence of minors, said Rissmeyer. "My goal is to learn the way things are before we change anything. . . . It's time to take a look at [the alcohol policy]," said Deah of Students Patricia A. Rissmeyer. , Rissmeyer believes that the policy at Canisius is liberal when compared to policies at other educational institutions. According to the interpretation of our policy, Rissmeyer said that underage students are allowed to possess alcohol. Administrators, working with students and faculty, revised the College's alcohol policy in 1985 due to the change in the drinking age from 19 to 21 years of age. The staff of the Student Affairs Office will gather Nov. 7 to evaluate and discuss Canisius' current alcohol policy, said Dr. Thomas E. Miller, vice president for student affairs. by Molly McCarthy ■ vuppi ::: -■,' i^iki-:. ;y\ : t:/'^V.vS:su jfif Jj||gk .r^sjfnr % jjgHH^ *jjjp HHF3lj |S§ * ■^Sai . According to this count, Canisius had too many spaces, Franz stated. The situation came to a head two weeks ago when plaster from a section of ceiling on the first floor of the ramp began to fall, forcing this portion of the ramp to be closed off. Because of this, 25 parking spaces, designated for Blue Cross employees, were lost. The situations hasn't been resolved yet, Franz stated.
