Photo by daveleone Alcohol still plagues Canisius by Steve Fralick Griffins News Reporter by Jennifer Dole Griffin News Reporter The alarm, called "The Personal Protector" is available for a cost of $9.95, which includes a battery. "We thought it would be a good idea in light of what happened at UB," said Paul Graham, bookstore manager, referring to the rape and slaying of a University at Buffalo student earlier this month. By pulling out a small ring from the unit, an alarm is set off to ward off would-be attackers. The unit also contains a burglar alarm that can be placed within a closed door, alerting anyone if the door is opened. A heat sensor is included in the alarm, allowing it to function as a fire alarm. In response to recent concerns about safety at Canisius, the campus bookstore has made available for purchase several portable personal alarms, endorsed by Public Safety. Campus safety presentation offered Public Safety Officer SgL Dominic Barome will be giving a presentation on campus personal safety and crime prevention, onNov. 8 at3 p.m. in the Palisano Pavilion. All those concerned about safety on campus are encouraged to attend. Generally, sources say no. Kathryn E. Philliben, assistant dean of students and director of Residence Life, believes that although the campus' Alcohol Task Force is very concerned about the welfare of Canisius students, the residence halls now are a far cry from party dormitories.come to Canisius? While Philliben thinks that "it is a good idea for a college campus to offer that option," she advocates placing the practice of responsible drinking in the hands of the students. Since 1988, recovering alcoholic students at Sl Bonaventure have lived in a dormitory wing of St. Francis Residence Hall that is alcohol-free. The sleepout, sponsored by Circle K and Phi Gamma Nu, will be held on Friday, Nov. 9 from 8 p.m. until 8 a.m. in the Bart Mitchell quad. A "Sleepout for the Homeless" is being held to raise awareness of the homeless problem in New York State and the Buffalo area. It has been estimated that there are 80,000 to 100,000 homeless people in N.Y. state.
