buffalo express vol unr saturday december 31 1870 commerce of buffalo a review of the year 1870 in accordance with our annual custom at the close of the year we present a series of . statistics exhibiting the principal features of the trade and commerce of buffalo for th rear ihto the exposition is an encourag ing one tbe deficient corn crops of is6b and i*#.9 bad tbe effect of greatly curtailing the commenfe of the north in one of its i-'-ading elements—a cereal which not only furnishes an important item of the grain trade by lake canal and railroad but is the chief rehun for fattening the kve stock and animal product which furnish other im portant staples of traffic yet notwith standing tbe fact that the surplus of this grain was less than half the annual average for the previous ten years the morements of grain and live stock at this point show a decided increase over tbe previous year live stock below are tables giving a comparative view of the receipts of cattle hogs and sheep for the year the figures were com plied from sources which leave no room for question as to i heir reasonable accuracy the receipt of rattle are computed by esti mating it head to the car careful tallies made fc.r years st the stock yards prove mat this average is almost absolutely exact but any attempt to estimate the average of sheep or bagl by car loads is hopcif y use less in the reihjrts of railroad receiptji no distinction i nude between double and sin gle deck when as one obviously contains iv ;■-" as many animals as tbe other our figures exhibitliik the receipts ol sheep and bags are compiled directly from the yard banks of the respective yards which contain careful record of all the animals received by hlfll count the shipments are given by car leads us any other mehim is more u guc'a.-work it will be an that there has basß a slight increase in the move ment of csttlc and she«*p while the receipts of bqfip are lacs than in 1869 the same f-iilii off in thi item has occurred st the r-ther live c cent bb of the country and from the same rca*a the ar opomd with a s '- ';" of corn aftjh tho high abbbbi of hogs bad a tendency to check traffic in ll.eui after the novrnntl abundant tx.rn crop was gnihend the long continuance of mild weather late into the sexsoli po-tj.i ucd packing op rati n and at the same time *>\ as favorable for feeling consequently the general movement in hogslsat lea-t a month later this year than usual | aa an item of interest we hare aouad the statl'tics of other live stock mark i with which our owa il intimately
