colfax on the motion of senator sumner was called upon to pre side on taking the chair he stated the purpose of tbe bbeeting aad ia a few very appropriate remarks slluded to the life and eminent public services of the deceased the following senators were appointed a committee to prepare suitable resolution and make all necessary arrangements for the attendance of senatora at the funeral of the deceased mr hamlin of maine mr sherman of ohio mr scott of pennsyl vania mr trumbull of luinois aud mr williams of oregon the conmittee re ported the following resolutions which were unanitnoualy agreed to resolved that we have received with profound sorrow the announcement of tho death of hoc edwin m stanton whoee eminent public aervioee entitled him to the grateful thanks of the people of the united states second that we tender to hia widow and family our sincere syir.patby in their bereavement and in token of our respect for his memory we will in a body attend lis funeral and follow his remains to the grave third that a copy of these resolutions be furnished to the widow of the deceased i in addition to the namea previously pub lished senatora chandler and edmunds and representatives judd and hooper will act aa pall-bearers of mr stanton the funeral of mr stanton will take place at twelve m monday from his late residence on x street in franklin square vt the request of justices of the supreme court concurred in by lhe family the ar rangements were taken in charge by tho wir department in compliance with the wishes of the family hat the funeral should be strictly arivate there will it no military display but in order that the general desire of the public to join in the obsequies may be gratified officers will be on the ground to assign the appropriate position in the pro fession to those who may appear st the tppointed time in deference to the expressed wish of mrs stanton the coffin will bo closed in the hamber where he died after this is done he bryant offered resolu tions ot respect to the late hon edwin m stanton which were unanimously adopted and a committee appeinted to attend the f ucernl of the deceased dispatches show that honors will by cards with similar expressions of aflvction and condolence a delegation from the union league club of new york arrived hare this morn ing especially to attend tha foosral it consists of judge davies 8 b chittenden george w blunt vincent colyer and howard potter there were probably a hundred hacks besides many private carriages in the pro cession the hearse waa drawn by four j gray horses i although it waa raining thousands of persons gathered in the immediate vicinity of the residence of the deceased to witness the proceedings attendant on the funeral policemen in force kept the pavements and carriage way clear of obstructions the remains wer ' conveyed to oak ridge ce mecery for interment additional details washington december 27 no business was transacted to-day in official quarters owing to the funeral of the late mr stan ton and all tho departments were closed and drsped in mourniug the mother and sisters of mr stanton arrived here christ mas night from steubenville ohio by special car the family of the deceased have received numerous sympathetic tele grams and letters from public man in the seveial district of columbia courts to-day resolutions were adopted with reference to the death af mr stanton members of the bar and citizens also held meetings at which speeches were made eulogistic ofthe decessed the national executive committee of colored men represented by george ca dowina president sella martin vice president profeasor vaahon and mr revels were assigned positions in the fu neral procession by the city council major delancy and major
