to the present build ing august ist 1867 for several yean previous the large increase of basinets and m prosperity of the bank had forced upo3 the trustee the necessity of building abs jking house puapose this was finally ex changed for the lot now occupied by this building and the work of construction was commenced in the tf ing of 1566 the trustees can point with just pride to this building w one of the finest and movt expensive in the city and situated upon one of the most commanding of its business lots it is in the heart of the businessof the city onits greatest thorough fare accessible from all directions ottering every facility for the transaction of it bus iness and containing every material ele ment of safety for the large amount of funds and property intrusted to its keep ing the results of science and experience in the construction of vaults and safes hare ail been brought into service in providing the means and space for all its prospective business and the safety of its assets the expense to the institution has been very iarge but is justified by its relations to the i>u"lic and tbe condition of its avsilable fund the large accumulation of surplus profits to tbe bank is a subject which requires aosgo explanation the theory and prac tee of the banks is to pay deposi tor j a regular interest of » \ per cent which receiving upon all its loan the legal ntertfat of 7 per cent the differ ence of rate is the resource of the bank to pay its current expenses but the state of the country for the past six years ha en abled the bank to realize a much greater income from its investments the war which broke out in iihji compelled the gov ernment to issue large amounts of govern ment bonds the interest of which was pay able in gold the bank under the authority of the
