between the san joaquin am5 sacramento rivers twelve milea long ami three milea wide and containing an area of fourteen thousand acres which waa subject to overflow by all high tides and to great devastation by occaaional floods haa been reclaimed and put in cultivation with the most gratifying results it required an em bankment forty live milea in circuit and tive feet high to enclose tha island and thirty self-acting water-gates were needed to discharge the drainage of tha land the cost of the woa-ka including dams and levees waa eighty thousand dollars in 18g8 437b acres were sold at an average price of twelve dollars and sixty-nine cents the acre the greater put of which wa thrown upon the market in order to pay oft taxes arising from the coat of reclamation the remainder of the land ia not for sale some idea of the amazing fertility of the soil may be derived from the fact that npon one ranch of this island three successive crops of wheat of sixty-nine fifty-two and tifty
