to treat his disease suc cessfully in a long and active experience with these diseases 1 have met with thousands of cases similar to thin and am convinced that a want of knowledge upon this subject has been fraught with painful and fatal result to hundreds of thousands of the human race in this country alone during the la«t decade i tiud as a rule no matter how well informed people are upon the current topics of the day in commerce mechanics political economy theology or other departments of twienetl and art they are totally ignorant of tlie laws of health and tbe causes indica tions and methods of remedying mm of the most prevalent diseases particularly con sumption as long as this condition of the public mind exists consumption will not cease to be the scourge ot our race until they mm taught to took upon catarrh sore turoat and bronchitis as its moat fruitful causes its ravages will remain unmitigated the published statements of mortality in moot of the large cilica of this country and england point us to the fact that nearly one fuurth of those whodie fall victim to disease of the organs of respiration through tbe apathy of tbe medical profession and the ignorance and fatalistic tendencies of the unprofessional clastic this disease has be come the most fatal in the loug catalogue o mnbtj "•• which afflict humanity this series of letters will consist of about twenty-five in uumbcr and present to the evader a comprehensive description of the nature causes symptom ami general prin ciples of treatment of all the common dis eases of tbe nasal passages throat i am strength ened and sustained in my determination to write for the information of the people by the example of one ofnbe brightest orna ments of my profession sir james clarke ibjiiltmi in ordinary to the yueen of great itriiain wlio wrote a book upon consump tion for tbe guidance of the people of eng land i shall prove to the invalid that the fiyotem of treatment 1 propose for these dis ease is the only rational compete and suc cessful one by the presentation from time to time of personal testimony from those who have expencened its beneficial result thu treatment of diseases of the throat and lungs by medicated inhalation uasprob alily been more extensively practiced by myself than any other pbyoieian in this vuntry and the success of ray practice in several of the large cities has been sufficiently attested by the press and thousands of indi viduals who experienced lta benedcial re sults i have proved that thousands of cases of consumption considered hopeless were per fectly curable and done more than any other to eulighten the public mind upon the na ture and causes of thu dreadful disease medicated inhalation is a distinct branch of therapeutics and none but those who have studied and practiced it long and faith fully are able to use it with success gen eral practitioners do not resort to ft habit ually because its use is attended with incon venience to them and they lack that practi cal experience so necessary to i ncure success it is easier to prescribe cod liver oil or a cough mixture or order a change of climate to get rid of a trouble-ome patient who i going to die tbe mist is no better than rich diet and the last people are lear n is cruel in the extreme i have opened an office ta the city of buf falo at so 00 kiagara street and cordially invite aj buffalo express vol xxvi thursday february 9 1871 nolbgul dr hunter os the prevalence and importance pulmonary diseases and their treatment by medicated inhalation editor botmm express kib :— having long devoted ray attention m lusi t-ly to the study and treatment of affection of the air passages of the head throat and lungs and published extemive i in the leading ttecular and religious jour nals of most of the urge cities of this coun try my riews upon the nature causes ami ! auxiliary local treatment by medicated in halation and other method of topical medi cationl of disease of these parts in the form of let ten i propose laying them before the people of thin city through the medium of your columns during the terra of my pro fessional risit here i trust am believe they wiil aid thom whose lungs bare al ready become seriously affected in tbeir ef forts to obtain a knowledge of their true condition and awaken in tbe minds of those suflvring from minor maladies of these regions a ht of tbe ini]k>rtance of remedying them before they advance into more ftrrimis stage or culminate in con sumption iurtf 1 i>elieve that no fact m medicine is better established by tbe ob servations of all classes of physicians in all couctiiea tb in that which proves to us that bronchitis and other catarrhal affection of the air passages generally result in dis organization of the lung anil that fearful train of symptoms characterizing a condi tion to which the term cossimhuon ha been truly applied—the victim lieing literal ly consumed as the disease progresses—if neglected or improi>eriy treated that a want of knowledge upon the>e subjects i exists among tbe masses < an not be nieces*-1 fully deputed lam constantly being ap piieij to by persons in advanced mid in many mm hopeless stages of consumption who assure me with the utmost confidence that they are laboring under bronchitis anil who evince an indifpoution to be con vinced that it in of a more serious character when they nrbt experienced difficulty in the throat or chest their family physician informed them that it was only bronchi tis,*'or catarrh a mil«l and transient disorder which would " soon paw off out unfortunately for the patient the severity of the attendant constitutional dis turbances but became mitigated and the 1 x-:il disease in the bronchial tubes stealthi ly and almost imperceptibly progressed uu-1 til the health and strength of the lungs !•■■came undermined cough purulent exirc toralion mm of flesh and emaciation lushes or hectic fever night sweat liemor i rhage or bloody sputfi c occurred when i the same physician refused to express a different opinion in order to cover up the 1 fault of hit owu want of caution and care or 4mhms the fact that he did not posses ihe skill mm to treat his disease suc cessfully in a long and active experience with these diseases 1 have met with thousands of cases similar to thin and am convinced that a want of knowledge upon this subject has been fraught with painful and fatal result to hundreds of thousands of the human race in this country alone during the la«t decade i tiud as a rule no matter how well informed people are upon the current topics of the day in commerce mechanics political economy theology or other departments of twienetl and art they are totally ignorant of tlie laws of health and tbe causes indica tions and methods of remedying mm of the most prevalent diseases particularly con sumption as long as this condition of the public mind exists consumption will not cease to be the scourge ot our race until they mm taught to took upon catarrh sore turoat and bronchitis as its moat fruitful causes its ravages will remain unmitigated the published statements of mortality in moot of the large cilica of this country and england point us to the fact that nearly one fuurth of those whodie fall victim to disease of the organs of respiration through tbe apathy of tbe medical profession and the ignorance and fatalistic tendencies of the unprofessional clastic this disease has be come the most fatal in the loug catalogue o mnbtj "•• which afflict humanity this series of letters will consist of about twenty-five in uumbcr and present to the evader a comprehensive description of the nature causes symptom ami general prin ciples of treatment of all the common dis eases of tbe nasal passages throat bronchial tubes lungs and heart comprising catarrh omh influenza diptheria bronchitis laryngitis asthma consumption and heart i>i«;as the theory and practice ot medk-ntcd inhalation will be fully explained and all the subjects treated in plain non i tccsinichl language comprehensive to non piofession:il readers lam aware that 1 shall meet with much opikwition in the m*jm 1 intend to pursue yet i am strength ened and sustained in my determination to write for the information of the people by the example of one ofnbe brightest orna ments of my profession sir james clarke ibjiiltmi in ordinary to the yueen of great itriiain wlio wrote a book upon consump tion for tbe guidance of the people of eng land i shall prove to the invalid that the fiyotem of treatment 1 propose for these dis ease is the only rational compete and suc cessful one by the presentation from time to time of personal testimony from those who have expencened its beneficial result thu treatment of diseases of the throat and lungs by medicated inhalation uasprob alily been more extensively practiced by myself than any other pbyoieian in this vuntry and the success of ray practice in several of the large cities has been sufficiently attested by the press and thousands of indi viduals who experienced lta benedcial re sults i have proved that thousands of cases of consumption considered hopeless were per fectly curable and done more than any other to eulighten the public mind upon the na ture and causes of thu dreadful disease medicated inhalation is a distinct branch of therapeutics and none but those who have studied and practiced it long and faith fully are able to use it with success gen eral practitioners do not resort to ft habit ually because its use is attended with incon venience to them and they lack that practi cal experience so necessary to i ncure success it is easier to prescribe cod liver oil or a cough mixture or order a change of climate to get rid of a trouble-ome patient who i going to die tbe mist is no better than rich diet and the last people are lear n is cruel in the extreme i have opened an office ta the city of buf falo at so 00 kiagara street and cordially invite aj
