Scope and Content

This collection contains materials about Royal F. Netzer, who was President at the State University College at Oneonta from 1951 to 1970. Included in this collection are correspondence, articles, photographs, and other ephemera related to Netzer. The collection is arranged into three series.

Biographical Note

Royal Franklin Netzer was born on December 5th, 1907 in Crookston, Minnesota. He graduated from Bemidji Normal School in MN. He received his B.S. from the University of North Dakota in 1934. He was also married to Clara Voss in the same year. He received his M.A. from the University of Iowa in 1935 and his PhD from the same university in 1937. His first job was teaching at a junior high school in Thief River Falls, MN for four years. He then went on to be principal of Roosevelt Elementary School in Iowa City. He was Associate Professor of Education at Tempe, AZ from 1937 to 1939 and Dean of the State University College at Geneseo from 1939 to 1951. He became President of the State University at Oneonta in 1951 and retired in 1970. During his time there the college grew from 700 students to 4,500 and 30 new buildings were constructed on campus. He died in 1986 at the age of 78.
