Scope and Content
This collection contains materials about Clifford J. Craven, who was President at the State University College at Oneonta from 1970 to 1987. Included in this collection are correspondence, articles, photographs, and other ephemera related to Craven. The collection is arranged into three series.

Clifford J. Craven was born on January 4th, 1920 in Huntington, MA. He received his B.A. in political science from Syracuse University. In 1943, he married Marion McCarthy in Spokane, Washington. During World War II, he was stationed in England where he served with the 457th B-17 Bomber Group of the U.S. 8th Army Air Corps. After the war he served in the U.S. Air Force Reserves for 30 years and retired with the rank of colonel. He received his M.A. in guidance from Columbia University and a Ph.D in education from Syracuse. He also received a doctor of laws degree from Seinan Gakuin University in Japan in recognition of his service to international education. He served for six years as Assistant Dean of Men at Syracuse before coming to Oneonta. He became the dean of students at SUCO in 1952. He then went to a similar position at the University of Oklahoma before returning to Oneonta as dean of the college in 1964. In 1966, he was appointed vice president and became acting president in 1970. He became the official fifth president in 1971. He retired in 1987. He died at the age of 82 on October 15th, 2002, in San Antonio, Texas.
