Tim house is painted after the moat modern style, tbe body being a dark, olive green, with red trimmings to match, aud presents a novel and unique appearance, setting olf to good advantage the beautiful yard and its belongings. Skinner, pustor of the Presbyterian Church, in thi< village, preached an excellent sermon for the benefit ot the children lost Sunday morning, tiling his text from Malachl, 3rd chap , and 17th verse, tbe first clause of the ver*e; viz: " Aud they shall bo miue, *iltli the Lord of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels. '■ There was a good attendance, both of children and older member* of the congregation,and the sermon proved Instructive alike to both old and young. The tnoruing was a line one, which ad led much to the interest felt Iu the sermon. —Last Saturday night the continuation of the raco for the gold badge at the Youngs town ll ller Kink took place, but owing to their t>eiug no competitor to match him iu the race, the winner of the previous Saturday evening, Mr. Aldeu llowker, of Wilson, was allowed to skate on timo by the propil •tor of the rink, aud made the remarkable time of two mile* iu lli minute*, and was awarded the gold bodge as bis personal property. A good crowd were In atteudauce, and everything was rouducted iu an orderly aud quiet manner, aud a good evening's sport was enjoyed by those present. Hereafter the riuk will be open to tbe public Tuesday and Saiurdn; evenings. Saturday evening a masquerade carnival will be given, at which a good attendance Is requested. For particulars, see small programmes. — Mrs Edward liurke, aged 60 years, attempted to commit suicide at 3 o'clock ye* terday afternoon at her residence, No. Bowery street, by cutting her throat with a razor. At the time Mrs. liurke attempted to take her own life, her husband, who is bllud, and hai been often seen begging for a living, was in au adjoining room when he he*rd a gurgling sound aud sulxequeutiy ascertained the cause and gave an alarm Tbe neighbors came in and Coroner Cosford was summoned and on examination it was ascertained that Mrs Burke bad cut four gashes iu ber throat, but none of them were necessarily fatal. Dr. Coaford dressed tbe wounds and friends nude the unfortunate woman as comfortable as possible. Last summer Mrs. Burke was at tbe county bouse during which time ber busbaud was iu the county most of the tune, and when he returned to town ho took his wife home. Mrs. Burke gave as a reason for committing tb) act tbat she did not want to live any longer. -Luckpurt Union. Barn urn & Son, variety store, Buffalo, N. Y., was in town several days this week, transacting business for the firm, and enjoying angling with the hook and line. — Mrs. George Chipman, of Buffalo, accompanied by her duughter, Miss Jenevlove, Is the guest of Miss Jennie Powell and mother in this village, with whom she is •pending a pleasant visit. Her infant daughter also accompanies her. —Mils Belle Millard, of Tonawnndn, is in attendance at the sick bed of her aunt. Miss Izzie B. Ilaab, of Fort Niagara, is making a pleasant stay of several months at that Post, enjoying the line scenery, and splendid opportuniles offered for boating and fishing on every hand. —Mr and Mrs. Edwin 1,. Jeffery, of the City of Uicks, arrived in this place the forepart of the week to take ndsantngo of the fine facilities offered for fishing. While in Youngstown they were tho guests of their parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Hall. — Mr. L. C. Bonis, of this village, started Monday evening for Detroit. Mich., to attend the Commencement Exercise* of his two daughters. Misses I.eoua and Anna, who have been attending school in that city during tho past fall and winter. Drake has raligned his position as superintendent of the Lockport City Water Work*. —The next meeting of the Niagara Conn ty Teacher*' association will be held at Wilaon on the third Saturday In September next -Channcey McDonald, an old resident and wealthy farmer living two miles north of Uasport, died Wednesday moining very suddenly. The cause is supposed to be paralysis of the heart. He was sick only a few davs, and was not considered daugwoualy I ill. CHILDREN'S DAY Children's Day was observed in the Presbyterian Church last Suuday evening A large au<! attentive congregation were present to witneas the exercise*. After the congregation had been seated, the Sabbath School Scholars cstue up from the basement and filed down the aisle singing an appro priate song, after which thsy took their respective tests in classes with their teacher*. Mr William Smlthson, the efficient Superintendent of the Sabbath School. then gave a *hort addre** of welcome to the people present, and gave a abort aynopai* of the success the Sunday School had achieved during the past year, and of ita good financial standing at the present time. Rev. Jsmes A. Skinner, the excellent pastor of the church, then offered a fervent prayer, when the tegular exer ises of the evening were opened, which consisted of recitations, singing, instrumental and vocal duetts, recital of class es in concert, essays, fto , &c. The church was handsomely trimmed with green leaves and presented u beautiful sight. On the wall, back of the pulpit, was a neart made of green leaves, and inside of this heart was a cross made of the same material, oruainent ed with flower*, while a chain of leave* extended down each side of the wall, and meeting, formed a very pleasing contrast, with the whito wall for a background, in front of the pulpit, and ranged on tables, were flowers of all descriptions in profusion, and their sweet aroma filled the eutire ■ church. The side* of the gallery were also, decorated with llowers, auil tho whole ar- | retirement reflects credit U|K)ll those who so kindly assisted in trimming and furnishiug flower*. Tho exercises of the eveuiug I were quite lengthy, but were carried out j very well considering the limited time given for their preparation. The singing, more especially, was one of the pleasant feature* of the evening's eutertainment, and was rendered both by the children anil the older scholars in au an acceptable and satisfactory manner, and was well appreciated by the largo congregation in attendance. Several new and novel features wore introduced into the evening'*programme of exorcises. Among these may he mentioned the appearance of a large class of little girls, ill which three were set apart from the rest for designating the different al tributes of Faith Hope auil Charity. This wn* done by ploc lug oil their heads crown* of fane* colored paper with the names of each of these virtues inscribed thereon In beautiful letter*, which produced a striking effect and wn* well received. In another Instance, su evergreen tree was placed upon the rostrum, and a class of boys, each representing some excellent virtue, willi the nnino printed in plain letters on pustelioard cards and as they hung them on tho tree, each olio recited a corresponding verse to the card held by theui. Sage testified that Win Kidder called blm about half past nine to see Myrtle, saying; " She has taken oil of cedar." Dr. Sane found her In convulsions from haviug taken some poison, which be supposed waa oil of cedar. Hbe died about half an hour after he arrived. He gave her an emetic, but thinks she could not swallow He saver heard of using oil of cedar internally. It was used sometimes in liniments. C R. Cox, drug clerk, sold Win.
