Niag VOL. 2. TOPICS OF THE WEEK. The wrecked steamship Arragon j has been completely abandoned on i the coast of Anticosti. Five men were killed Friday and \ I nine injured by a dynamite explo-1 sion at Llanelly, Wales. Jay Gould is about to go round the world. It is the only thing, we believe, he has failed to get around. The railroads announce an ad- | vance in east-bound freights, to take j effect December 1st—that is as soon : j as the canal closes. It is the old i story. ' f The American delegate to the So-I1 cialist congress at the Jfague iu 1871 [ has just been sentenced in that city I < to two years' imprisonment on a! 1 charge of obtaining money by fraud- j, nlent advertisements. I' < . I' The evidence of Suleiman Daoud » as to tho responsibility of Arabi Pa- ! j sha for the burning of Alexandria } and the attempt to murder has been ' very considerably shaken by the tes- [ timony of other witnesses. ' Patrick Casey, the second of the •' prisoners accused of the murder of 1 Joyce family in Mayo, has been con- t vieted and sentenced to be hanged on the 15th pros. Casey throughout protested his innocence. j Full particulars of the Lough t i Mask murder are said to have been i communicated by an informer to the J authorities at Dublin. Three per- j sons are in custody in that city, charged with the offence, and will be tried * there. ' i Utah is to be represented in Con- 1 gross by a Mormon, provided the House admits tho man elected. Even 1 ( tho Edmunds Commission cannot re- < fuse Caine a certificate of election, ' ho having five votes to the Gentile candidate's one. t A five-yeah-old boy in Newark, j N.J., having been ordered by the , court to bo taken from the custody t of his father and given to his mother, resisted so strenuously that the order was suspended, and tho result is likely to bo that tho father and i mother will bo reunited. Tho youngs- 1 ter seems to be stronger than the ' _ J Not content with making silly charges against the character of Mrs. j Langtry, tho papers have commenced 1 producing cuts of that lady that look 1 about as 'much like a lady that is j: noted 'for her beauty as the picture a of Lydia E. Piukham looks like Jesse 11 James. The Jersey Lily, it would 1 appear, is in hard luck making her t| debut in America. w A Kentucky murderer is trying to get clear on tho ground of insani- a ty, and his attorney called the atten- tion of the jury to the fact that his client habitually parted his hair in I the middle. The honest jurors look- j ed at each other, and shook their [U( heads wisely, as though they more m than half suspected the fellow's head el was wrong. It is about as dangerous to be a bl king and rule a foreign nation as it s to attack an editor in this country, re V woman went ont gunning for kings at Belgrade the other day, and ° J to ircd a couple of shots at King Milan er jut missed him, and true to her wo- vo nanly nature she fainted as soon as lie fired the last lime. It is a dull lay when kings don't get fired at, or do )ombs thrown at them, or some kind To if wild excitement don't shatter their i Wl W1 lerves. do William Hamilton, of New j"' fork, who has been confined in an j cj( nsaue asylum for six years, has just j nanaged to have his case brought up j or examination, and the courts have lecided that he is sane, and he claims ; fel hat he always was. Six years ago he foi >rokc a pane of glass, accidentally, lal n a store, and was arrested, and he pe opposes he got mixed up with the unatics, and they sent him to the «y!um, and probably sent a lunatic j 331 o jail for ten days for breaking the | [lass. ' su the ring which lay that moment snugly in his vest pocket, Lord Victor tec&me aware to that his white mare, Bessie, was acting strangely. She pricked up her ears, staring ! suspiciously about her and breathing stertorously. It wag in vain that he endeavored clc to soothe her. Victor heard the tread of mi Ift feet, anil a clear voice with Italian ac- , it—Caroletta's voice, cried ! Turn back, my lord !" John Chinaman Retaliates. Washington, Nov. 19.—The following is an extract from a letter received .Saturday by a gentleman connected with the State Department, from an attachee of the Chinese legation here, under tba administration of Chin Lan Pin. It is thought particularly significant in connection with the recent vigorous protest of the American Minister at the Court of China touching violations by the Chinese of the rights of American merchants and shipping ut Shanghai. The extract is as follows: "It is rumored hero that the Legation of China in the United States will shortly be ordered home in consequence of the passage of the recent Chinese Hill, and that in place of a Minister you are to have simply a Consul, I was very nnxious to visit the United States again, but the coming attitude of my country will not permit me to do so. The passage of that hill has produced a very unfavorable impression here, and the outlook for the shipping interests of the United States is Anything but satisfactory. I trust a better understanding of the mutual interests of both countrios will soon bo reached." The letter was written from Hong Kong, September sth. The author's position in the diplomatic service of China is such as to enable him to be intelligently informed upon tho subject. Ireland's Troubles. A Dublin despatch savs:—a farmer namod McEnvoor, at Oldcastlo, county Cavan, refusing to abandon his farm, from which the previous tenant had been evicted, was shot while returning from a fair, receiving two bullets in tho head, froui the effects of which ho is dying. Dolaney, who attempted to assassinate Judge 1-awson, was Monday committed for trial. The prisoner was guarded to and from the police station by a strong escort of mounted police with drawn sabres. Michael Cssey, father of I'utrick Casev, who was sentenced to hang for the murder of Bridget Joyce, was indicted Monday for complicity iu the murder of the Joyce family. It is probable that after tho conclusion of tho trial of Michael Casey, the remaining four prisoners accused of complicity in the Joyce murders will pleud guilty and throw themselves on tho mercy of tho Crown, asking for life-long sorvitudo instead of hanging.Russia's Intrigues Against England. ABorlin despatch says:—lt Is believed Baron do Giers, who is now conferring with Bismarck, is attempting to form u coalition in opposition to tho English Eastern policy and especially with reference to the Egyptian question. 110 will go to Vienna to see the Austrian Minister of Foreign Affairs. Tile Porto lias made approaches to tho French Government to induce Franco to form an entente cordial? with Egypt against England. Baron Corcel, the new French Minister at Berlin, has been ordered to tuko his immediate departure for his post, in consequence of the conference between M. do Clierß and Bismarck. A Berlin despatch says M. do Giers states 1 that the impressions he received at Barzin wero most sotisfactory. The condition of affairs in Franco was especially discussed. M. le Giers, at un audience with tho Emperor, informed him that Bismurk and he agreed on ill essential points. Paying Her Election Bet. (Special to the L'hicsgo Herald.) The Committee on Investigation made a report, supplementing it with a demand that they be accorded the privilege of producing proof to j substantiate their charge* before a secret J tribunal, or, if the trustees desire it, by pub , lie proof. The report sets forth that of all the money spent, ostensibly for the skirmish ing fund, only two items had even the remotest connection with a skirmishing pro ject. The book should recommend j itself to every school in Canada. Wo congratulate the lady upon her excellent work. Hcarod beyond all expression, the young I man made haste to a doctor's oillce, where 1 remedies of various natures were speedily applied, llut they all seemed lu vain. His legs became swollen, his eyes bloodshot, and | his skin of a mottled red snd yellow. His | head grow to twice its natural size, and the doctor gave him up, and at lust account* bis head was still swelling. Latkk. It hns been discovered that the young man was not bitten by a snake, but that ho had taken several driuksof that celebrated "Dock" whiskey, and his head is still swelling. Many complaints aro being made by parties v. ho lire compelled to use the ferry from this side of tho river. {Sometimes they have to wait an hour or more, until the proprietor can find somebody to row them across, and in many instances they are forced to pay iu advance, and then wait until somebody having a boat comes along, when they are placed iu snid boat by the so called ferryman, to bo talcon across, tho party owning the bout not knowing that any fare had been paid, ami who- imagines he is only doing a neighborly act in accommodating the parties who wish to cross. This is nothing short of fraud. One evening last weok, a lady and gentleman wished to cross to Youngstown, and were made to pay 25 cents each iu advance; the regular faro is only 15 cents; but because tlu' sun liml (/one down they were forced to pay 10 conts extra. A young man from Youngfitowii who wus about crossing over in his own boat, wus solicited by thu proprietor of tho forry to take them over, " just for the suko of accommodation, you know!" John Mac pocketing tho 60 cents for no service returned. If the authorities oxact a license fee for the forry, it is their duty to see that said forry is properly conducted, or else abolish tho license altogether, and let every man who wishes ferry passenger* across, Tho other evening, while walking down, street, we noticed a poor old gray-headed woman, who is well-known to mo*t of our citizens, staggering along in front of us. Whether she staggered fiom weakness and old ugo, or from some other cause, is not for us to suy; but just behind us were two young men who begun to laugh at and make fun of the poor old body. The two laughers were of that class of galvanized gentlemen known to our citizens as tho "kid glovo ami walking cane gang," those la-ile-dah cyphers who haven't enough manhood about them to blacken their own shoes, if can get a sister or anybody else to do it for them; thoy wore u couple of. thiixjn with no hearta at all, nothing but a hard lump about the size of a horse-cbcfctnut in the place where the heart should bo. They laughed at the poor old lady because it was easy for them to laugh. Their laughing utensils are so evenly poised that anything sots tbem off. A sudden jar sets them to laughing, and we suppose a good kick would have the same effect, and we would like to see it tried. How human beings could look at that poor, haggard face, wrinkled aud pinched, at those eyes that were perhaps once beautiful und full of love and tenderness, but which are now dim and bloodshot, and langh like a hyena, is more than we could see. How they could look at tiiose gray hairs, if they ever bad a mother, and smile aud joke, is a mystery, unless they are natural born idiot*. Happily tine poor old woman was unable to notice the sneers of those feeble-minded puppies, aud sbe can march on to tho grave with no knowledge that in this enligbtenod nineteenth century there are male persons over twenty years old who will make fun of ap< or, old, gray-headed woman. Niag VOL. The railroads announce an ad- vance in east-bound freights, to take j effect December 1st—that is as soon : j as the canal closes. The Jersey Lily, it would 1 appear, is in hard luck making her t debut in America. w A Kentucky murderer is trying to get clear on tho ground of insani- a ty, and his attorney called the atten- tion of the jury to the fact that his client habitually parted his hair in I the middle. Six years ago he foi >rokc a pane of glass, accidentally, lal n a store, and was arrested, and he pe opposes he got mixed up with the unatics, and they sent him to the «y!um, and probably sent a lunatic j 331 o jail for ten days for breaking the [lass. Turn back, my lord !" Ca followed a smothered oath in a man's eri •f sound of a struggle, a woman's ' en id the beat of running feet through ' pup1 4 Vfl I P"3 I |
