December 14, 1968
The annual meeting of the Council was held at the Union College Library. Mr. Tolan called the meeting to order at 10:35 A.M. He introduced Mr. Charles Custer, the new Executive Director. At his request the Secretary read the minutes of the 1967 annual meeting. These were accepted as read.
Mr. Tolan then called for a report from the Rev. Laurence Hardy, Chairman of a Nominating Committee which also included Miss Dorothy Dralle and Mrs. Eleanor Reppenhagen. Father Hardy reported as follows:
Four Trustees have terms ending December 31, 1968: Gladys Brownell, Edward Chapman, Albert Hessberg and Edwin Tolan. The Nominating Committee has nominated seven candidates, from which the Council should choose four. The Committee's nominees are: Ursula Anker, Gladys Brownell, John Farley, Allan Kuusisto, Howard Littman, Carl Niemeyer and Helen Ouellette. It is also possible to have nominations from the floor.
Mr. Tolan called for nominations from the floor but there were none. A motion to close the nominations was made, seconded and carried. Mr. Tolan then explained voting eligibility and appointed Mr. Seaman and Mrs. Orr as tellers. Ballots were distributed and voting took place. The four nominees receiving the highest number of votes were: Mrs. Ursula Anker, Dr. Allan Kuusisto, Dr. Howard Littman and Dr. Carl Niemeyer (see attached tally sheet). Mr. Tolan introduced the two newly elected trustees who were present.
Mr. Tolan introduced Dean Lichterman of Union College who spoke on the necessity for cooperation among institutions in general and among the libraries of these institutions specifically if the quality of educational and research programs are to be maintained at a high level.
Mr. Tolan after thanking Dean Lichterman said a few words about the membership of the Council. The Nominating Committee has broadened the make up of the Board so that it now will represent not only libraries but the users of libraries. These people can give us advice about the attitudes and needs of faculty and other constituents. Our purpose is to serve the whole community and we need to know how we can best do this. Mr. Tolan indicated that he had been collecting evidence of user satisfaction among our constituents and would be glad to have additional evidence gathered by other council members. Such material will appear in a newsletter which Mr. Custer is preparing.
Mr. Tolan gave a brief account of the work of the Council during 1968. There have been both successes and disappointments. The courier service during the period May 1 to November 1, 1968 completed 14,783 transactions at a net cost of 47 cents per transaction. It had been hoped to expand this service but funds to do so were not forthcoming.
