Know all men by these Presents that I Derrickje Van Vrancka of the City of Albany, for an in Consideration of the sum of Forty five Pounds to me in hand paid and secured to be paid before the Delivery of these presents by Christopher Miller, the Receipt whereof I do hereby acknowledge, have Bargained and Sold, and by [torn] Bargain and Sell unto the said Christopher [torn] Wench about Twenty six years of age Named Nann together with a Male Child about Eleven Months old Named Yap To have and to hold the said Negro Wench and Child, by these presents, Bargained and Sold unto the said Christopher Miller his Executors Administrators and Assigns for ever, And the said Derrickje Van Vrancka, for my self my Executors Administrators the said Negro Wench and Child unto the said Christopher Miller his Executors Administrators and Assigns, Against me [torn] Van Vrancka my Executors Administrators [torn] all every other person and persons Whatsoever shall and will Warrent and for ever Defend by these presents Which said Negro Wench and Child The said Derrickje Van Vrancka have put the said Christopher Miller in fu[torn] Delivering said Wench and Child Before the seal[torn] –nefs where of I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 24th day of June in the Year of our Lord One thousand Seven Hundred and Eighty Six. | Description | A document recording the sale of a "negro wench and child" by Derrickje Van Vranken (spelled "Van Vrancka" throughout much of the document) to Christopher Miller, June 24, 1786. Three large tears in the page obscure some of the document text, which was handwritten in ink. The slave woman is identified as a twenty six year old named Nann, the child an eleven month old boy named Yap (?). Signed witnesses to the transaction were William Verplanck and James Chestney. |
