JOURNAL FOR ANTHROPOSOPHY
In this issue our readers will meet an old friend in a new form. What might have been Number 100 of the printed Newsletter of the Anthroposophical Society in America appears instead as Number 1 of the Journal for Anthroposophy published by the Society for its members and those friends of the anthroposophical movement who may wish to become its subscribers.
The idea of the Journal has ripened for several years within the Newsletter frame and now takes on visible form under its new masthead, designed by Thom Zay, pupil of Raoul
Ratnowski and teacher of woodwork and sculpture at the Rudolf Steiner School, New York. The publication of news about the Society, reports on anthroposophical activities, communications among the members, will continue to be the function of the mimeographed Newsletter and it will be the task of the Journal to print articles of greater length, poems, reviews and other pieces of more permanent interest.
The Journal’s aim is not “literary” in the conventional sense, but is rather to provide a vehicle for the written expression of experience which grows out of the ground of Anthroposophy. Where this is achieved in a form which can stand on its own before the world it will carry conviction.
It will certainly be some time before the Journal is more than the most modest kind of enterprise. It will be published twice yearly, in spring and autumn, and will probably rarely run to more than twelve or sixteen pages. It will thrive if members take it to their hearts and support it by writing for it, and by reading it with friendly objectivity.
It would be a pity if a step were taken in the field of
anthroposophical publication in this country with no word said about the pioneer efforts which preceded it. Many readers will recall with appreciation The Forerunner edited for six years by Virginia Moore and Proteus published and edited by Frederick Heckel. Both were bona fide magazines which presented Rudolf Steiner’s work to the American public. Ably edited, they had to be discontinued through circumstances beyond control. The fact that Miss Moore and Mr. Heckel are ready to assist the present editor with their experience and their critical judgment and advice is a good augury for the younger sister.
