Scope and Content Note

This collection contains materials connected with John S. Kidder and the 121st Regiment of New York Volunteers during the U.S. Civil War. It is divided up into two series, the first being Kidder and family's personal papers, 1853-1955, which include approximately 80 letters that John wrote to his wife Harriet during the war, and the correspondence, receipts and other items from his role on the Gettysburg Monument Committee twenty-five years later. The second series contains administrative records of Company I of the 121st Regiment, 1862-1912, particularly those concerned with ordnance and supplies (including clothing), along with muster rolls, correspondence, orders, inspection reports, and John S. Kidder's pension, muster in/out, and promotion papers.

Series Descriptions

Series 1. Personal Papers. 1861-1945.

Contains correspondence, consisting mostly of letters John S. Kidder sent to his wife Harriet during the Civil War. Also includes correspondence, receipts, subscription lists, and ephemera connected with the Gettysburg Monument Committee, on which John S. Kidder served. Additionally, contains notebooks, receipts, deeds, and insurance papers from Kidder and family. Arranged alphabetically.

Series 2. 121st Regiment of New York Volunteers Records. 1862-1912.

Contains administrative records of Company I of the 121st Regiment of New York Volunteers during the U.S. Civil War. The bulk of these records are concerned with ordnance and supplies (including clothing), along with muster rolls, correspondence, orders, and inspection reports. Includes John S. Kidder's pension, muster in/out, and promotion papers. Arranged alphabetically.


Biographical/Historical note

John S. Kidder was born on February 20, 1830 in England. His family immigrated to the state of New York in the early 1840s. He settled in Laurens, Otsego County, N.Y. with his wife Harriet (Matteson) Kidder in 1854.[1] John S. Kidder was Captain of Company I of the 121st Regiment of New York Volunteers during the U.S. Civil War, from 1862 to 1865. He was a carriage maker before and after the war, until 1879. Kidder then became a Port Warden in New York City, a job he held from 1880 to 1901.[2] He died on May 19, 1905 in Laurens.
