Scope and Content Note
The Civil War Collection contains correspondence, diaries, and various military papers of soldiers who served in the U.S. Civil War in New York State regiments, including Daniel M. Holt (Assistant Surgeon of the 121st Infantry Regiment), Samuel French, Newell Burch, Will Lewis, John Wright, Myron Adams, Joel W. Rogers, Lerni Howe Crary, James G. Derrickson, George A. Harrison, Harvey Henderson, Orin W. Monroe, and Dean A. Pierce. It includes records of some New York State regiments, along with personal papers, and formats such as photographs, scrapbooks, and autograph albums. This collection has been assembled from various sources.
Series 1. Letters and Other Papers of Soldiers.
Arranged alphabetically by last name. Generally, the military unit each man served in is listed after his name in italics.
Series 2. Records of Regiments That Served in the War.
Includes Co. K of the 37th Artillery Regiment of the New York State National Guard; 43rd Infantry Regiment of the New York State National Guard; 81st New York Infantry; 115th New York Infantry; and Co. K of the 121st New York Infantry.
Series 3. Copies of War Letters and Diaries.
Includes Daniel Holt, Assistant Surgeon of the 121st Infantry Regiment. Arranged alphabetically by last name.
Series 4. Scrapbooks and Autograph Albums.
Contains newspaper articles, obituaries and graphics concerning the Civil War. One volume also contains diary entries, and is in an order book of the Army of South Carolina, confiscated by the Union Army during the war.
Series 5. Photographs.
Photographs of soldiers and others involved in the Civil War.
Series 6. Miscellaneous.
Includes an engraving by A.R. Waud entitled, "The Lost Found," National Archives Facsimile photographs of Abraham Lincoln and Robert E. Lee, a collection of Civil War envelopes, a Civil War poem, published information about the draft, war bonds, a lecture about the war, and an advertisement for a lecture.
