The Memorial Art Gallery
FEBRUARY AND
MARCH
EXHIBITIONS
"The Eighth
Rochester
International
Salon of
Photography"
VOL. 8 NO. 4 - February, 1943
For the last week in February and through the month of March the Gallery will
present an unusual series of exhibitions that range in period from reproductions of Revolutionary emblems to paintings on whose canvases the varnish has
not yet dried and in provenance from Western New York to far-off Australia,
China and England. Headlining these will be the 8th Rochester International
Salon of Photography which, despite war-time restrictions and the difficulties of present-day communications, still maintains much of its international
character and its wide-spread American representation. The Salon Committee
and the sponsoring organizations of the city should be commended heartily for
their courage in undertaking the exhibition this year in the face of many uncertainties. The enthusiastic response of over one thousand entries from
photographers of America, Australia, Canada, China, England and Mexico should
be gratifying proof to them of the important morale values of the Salon in
these upsetting war days.
Although somewhat smaller in size than previous Salons, this 1943 event
is of unusually high quality with 28% of the submitted work being accepted
for the exhibition. John Vondell, A.P.S.A., Professor of Massachusetts State
College, Hans Kaden of Jenkinstown, Pennsylvania; and C. B. Phelps, Treasurer of the Photographic Society of America made up an excellent jury, selecting this year all three divisions of the exhibition - black-and-white prints,
transparencies and color prints. Five new Honorary Members of the Rochester
Salon were elected: Eleanor Parke Custis of Washington, D. C.; Fred Herrington of California; H. W. Wagner of Massachusetts; and C. B. Phelps of Grosse
Point, Michigan; and Arthur Mawhinney of New Rochelle, New York.
"The Jurors'
Show"
An event that was announced last May by the Gallery Is the forthcoming "Jurors' Show" - an exhibition of work by three outstanding contributors to the
1942 Rochester-Finger Lakes Exhibition who were nominated by the jurors for
that event to hold a group exhibit this spring. Hilda Altschule (Mrs. Willson Coates), Douglas Gorsline and Beatrice Ely Wose of Syracuse are the first
to be so honored, and an exhibition of their oils, watercolors, and drawings
is the second important event on this month's exhibition calendar. All three
are well-known to Rochester and to a larger public as well through their consistently fine work in annual regional events. Both Miss Altschule and Mr.
Gorsline are represented in the Gallery's permanent collection.
Hilda Altschule, who has developed a highly personal manner of painting
with her use of rhythmic patterns and an always provocative subject, has had
no formal art instruction. Trained In biology and philosophy, she is a graduate of Hunter College and received a Master of Arts degree from Cornell. At
present she is doing research work at Strong Memorial Hospital. Her work has
been exhibited in Buffalo, New York, Syracuse and Rochester, twice winning
purchase prize awards at the Gallery.
