THE NEW
EXHIBITIONS
9th Rochester
International Salon of Photography
VOL. 9 NO. 4 - FEBRUARY-MARCH, 1944
The 9th Rochester International Salon of Photography, boasting a larger number
of accepted prints than last year and having the same wide national and foreign
representation as the 1943 event, will be the featured exhibition offering in
February and March. Sponsored by nine civic-minded Rochester industries and the
Gallery, the Rochester Salon has come to be one of the most important and largest photographic events in the world, and acceptance in its black-and-white,
"Testing
Your Taste"
color, and color transparency sections is eagerly competed for despite war-time
difficulties of transportation and war-time shortages of paper, film and leisure
time. Over 1400 entries were received for the event from Canada, England and Mexico and 34 of the United States with 253 monochromes, 13 color prints, and 98
kodachromes being accepted by the jury for final hanging in the exhibition.
Stuyvesant Peabody, A.R.P.S., of Chicago; John W. Doscher of Saddle River,
New York; and P.H. Oelman, A.P.S.A., of Cincinnati formed an excellent three-man jury for the monochrome section with Alexander Clair, Rowland S. Potter and
Alling Clements of Rochester acting as jurors for the two color groups. To them
and to the untiring efforts of the following officers of the Salon and members
of its Executive Committee, the marked success of this 1944 Salon is due: Gertrude
H. Moore, Honorary Chairman; Chester W. Wheeler, Chairman; Jordan S. Ross, Vice
Chairman, Charles S. Foster, Secretary; Joseph Lillich, Treasurer; Gordon Berns,
Print Director; and Ralph Axon, Earl Esty, Walter Meyers, Dr. John Mulder, Robert
Robischon and Dr. Eugene P. Wightman, Executive Committee members.
Not to be out-done by the popular quiz programs of the day,the Gallery has planned a special art test of its own this month in the second exhibition event for
February - "Testing Your Taste", in which the Rochester public can judge in a
series of contrasted pairs of objects of everyday use what is good design and
why. Feeling strongly that in these days of restricted consumer supplies, good
designing - suitability of design to use, to material and to production methods -
is more than ever important, the Gallery has assembled a varied group of familiar household objects - furniture, china, kitchen utensils, silver, textiles, lamps,
etc. - of good and not-so-good design. The exhibition will indirectly set up
standards of good taste that are important equally for the consumer, the designer, the manufacturer and the retail merchant to develop and maintain.
Material for "Testing Your Taste", which is being sponsored as an educational
project of the Women's Council of the Gallery, has been gathered by the following special exhibition committees Miss Jean McCurdy, Chairman, Mrs. Walter S.
Swan, Vice Chairman, Mrs. Raymond Ball, Mrs. Francis S.Cunningham, Mrs. Kenneth
Field, Mrs. Leon Forgie, Mrs. Lester Garson, Mr. Kenneth House, Mrs. Gilbert McCurdy, Mrs. Charles Winslow Smith, Mr. Herbert Stern, Mr. Fritz Trautman, Mrs.
Hawley Ward and Mrs. Walter Will. The Gallery gratefully acknowledges its indebtedness to them and to the following Rochester retail stores who have generously lent to the exhibitions E.W. Edwards and Son; McCurdy and Company, Incorporated, Sears, Roebuck and Company; and Sibley, Lindsay and Curr Company.
