With all the traditional signs of fall in the wind from leaf-raking to ketchup making, the Gallery begins another year of stimulating and varied activities. Once
again a busy round of art classes, lectures, film programs, study courses and exhibitions gets under way this month which will bring a surprisingly large percentage of the people of Rochester through the Gallery doors from now until June. The
Gallery hopes that its members will take full advantage of every membership privilege and an active part in a year-long program of educational and recreational
activities for themselves, their children and their fellow Rochesterians.
Last season will undoubtedly establish a record
for the Gallery in the number and importance of
new additions to its permanent collection. The
happy circumstance of available resources in the
Marion Stratton Gould and the R. T. Miller Funds
at the time of the sale in New York of the remarkable art collection of the late Joseph Brummer made possible the acquisition of an unusually rich and rare group of objects. Ranging in
period from a Babylonian toilet jar dating from
about 800 B.C. to a 17th Century French portrait,
the new accessions present importent and often
unique items of Greek, Roman, Early Christian,
Italo-Byzantine, Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance art. Sculptures, textiles, paintings, ivory carvings, architectural fragments, furniture, enamels and gold and silverwork offer a
wide variety of material and fill out long wished periods as well as types of craftwork in the
Gallery's collection. This month as part of the

of the season the entire group of new accessions will be arranged in Gallery D so that their
scope and importance may be viewed as a whole before they are moved to various permanent period
installations.
By far the largest group of objects date from
the Romanesque and Gothic periods - a field in
which the Gallery has already assembled a notable
collection. To the French Romanesque frescoed
apse acquired in 1939 is now added another fine
example of 12th Century painting - a large fresco
panel of the Madonna and Child painted in rich
earth tones of yellow, red and brown. This, together with a rare 9th Century freseoed head of a
