The Memorial Art Gallery
OF THE UNIVERSITY OF ROCHESTER
GALLERY NOTE
^G^
* ROCHESTER 3, NEW YORK
Vol. 21, No. 1 - October, 1955
The 1955 MEMBERSHIP CAMPAIGN
With a 17th Century poet as its slogan writer and a 20th Century "Hit
Parade" tune for its theme song, the Gallery's 1955 campaign gets off to an
auspicious start as these Gallery Notes go to press. John Donne's poignant
words — "No man is an island, intire of itselfe" on the campaign folder effectively point up how valuable and important is the Gallery's many faceted program of activities in making Rochester a richer, happier and more rewarding
place in which to live. Without adequate endowment and with no support from
public funds, the Gallery must again make this appeal for help to carry on its
work in the community and for every member — young and old — in it. If you have
not already re-enrolled, won't you please send in your pledge card soon? With
generous membership support for another year and with many a new name on the
lists, John Donne's much quoted bells will surely be tolling on October 11th —
this time, however,-victory bells and for the Gallery.
Mr. Clifford Van Derbogart, who so effectively headed last year's successful campaign, will again be General Campaign Chairman and serving with him
will be Mrs. Leo Dwyer as head of the Women's Teams and Mr. DeWitt Pike and
Mr. Arthur Underwood, the Men's Divisions. Mrs. Harold C. Hodge, Mrs. Donald
H. Kariher, Mrs. George C. Schlegel, Mr. Lucas Caple, Mr. George Lehman and
Mr. William F. Smith are the division leaders with Mr. William C. Wolgast heading
a new Educational Division and Mrs. Jasper Willsea the Suburban teams, which
this year will give a wide county coverage to the campaign. A three-man team of well-known civic leaders
and experienced campaigners — Miss Jean McCurdy, Mrs. Donald C. Padelford and Mr. E. Willard Dennis,
head the already hard at work Special Committee. Incidentally, Mr. Maurice Forman leads a most important
project of this Special Committee - the support of the conversion of the University's former Women's
Faculty Club behind the Gallery into a much needed creative Workshop Center which will make possible the
addition of new classes and the teaching of new, long wanted art techniques.
Mr. James W. Gray will be Chairman of the Industrial Division. Heading the Campaign's well planned
publicity and promotional projects is Mr. Donald M. Lewis, Jr. Mr. David Brown wrote the attractive campaign folder, already mailed to Gallery members with a most heartwarming response, which effectively
summarizes the appeal that over 400 enthusiastic campaign workers will now take to the people of the area.
Mrs. Herman Bakker heads the campaign Speakers Bureau, and Mrs. O. Cedric Rowntree will be in charge of
the four dinner and luncheon report meetings — dinner, September 30th; luncheon, October 4th; luncheon, Octo-
ober 7th and the final dinner on Tuesday, October 11th — all of which will be held at the Gallery. Miss Mary
Vullo, the Gallery's most able Executive Secretary for Membership, has done yeoman work in organizing the
thousands of campaign details and with her assistants, Miss Patricia Elkins, Mrs. Ruth Van Deusen and Mrs.
Grace Webster, will be the "home team" ready to help and answer all campaign questions. Mr. Herman
Bakker and Mr. Robert Moser will again form the all-important team of accountants.
The campaign goal this year is $128,700 ~ the largest .in the Gallery's history. Increasing costs of
maintenance, activities programs, instruction and equipment needs have all forced up the budget figures for
the coming year. The creating of necessary new studio, office and lecture room space in the Gallery which
has been made possible through the moving of the University to the River Campus, has unhappily also added
new items of expense, along with much needed elbow room and greater opportunities for community service.
