GALLERY NOTES
THE MEMORIAL ART GALLERY
Vol. 32, No. 6, February 1967
OF THE UNIVERSITY OF ROCHESTER
ROAD SHOW
When the new Artmobile starts carrying exhibitions from the Gallery to city school children, it will be almost literally a case of
"moving the mountain."
The itinerant art gallery, operated as a
joint enterprise of the City School District
of Rochester and the Gallery, is just about
the largest vehicle permitted on the streets
—a 40-foot-long trailer attached to a hefty
truck.
The Artmobile was scheduled to go out on
the road around the first of February, making two-day stops at each of the elementary
schools on its itinerary.
Custom-made to meet the unique specifications of a traveling exhibition gallery, the
giant van arrived in Rochester just before
Christmas, and work has proceeded since
in fitting it out for its first show, "Focus
on Faces," a collection of portrait paintings,
sculptures, masks, and other representations of the human head. The show includes
some of the prize pieces in the Gallery's
collection supplemented by works borrowed
from other city museums.
Specially geared to young viewers, the exhibits are placed low on brightly colored
panels which can be moved around to fit the
requirements of changing exhibitions. Operating on its own power system, the van is
equipped with all the modern devices, including air-conditioning. About 15 youngsters will be able to tour the exhibits at one time.
The project was made possible through funds
provided to the city under the Federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act of
1965.
CLOSING UP
LAST PARTY before the Gallery closed last month for major renovation was a festive Patrons' Evening at which patron and benefactor members were guests of the Board of Managers and their spouses. Among the high points were a concert by the 30
instruments in the Eastman School's Trombone Choir, electrifying in its effect in the Fountain Court, and a champagne gourmet supper supervised by Head Gourmet Francis D' Amanda. The
evening was the board members' personal thank-you to the Gallery's patrons. They hope to make it an annual event.
POPART? Actually, it's the real
thing. When the staff moved out a
few days after the party, they took
everything but the kitchen sink. Administrative offices, the Lending and Sales Gallery--and the refrigerator
— are now installed in the "Brown
House" on Prince Street, right behind the Gallery building. The Education Department has moved farther
afield, to a house at 4016 East Avenue
made available to the Gallery by Mr.
and Mrs. Michael Watson. Education's new telephone number is 586-1020.
The Brown House contingent
and the Creative Workshop in Cutler
may still be reached at the usual Gallery number, 473-0450.
OUR NEW AND GREATER GALLERY WILL REOPEN EARLY IN 1968
