The Gallery's permanent collection has grown
significantly over the last several years with the
addition of a wealth of major acquisitions in almost
all areas of the collection. These works of art, of
course, belong not only to the Gallery but also to all
of the people of our Rochester metropolitan area.
In observance of the holiday season, the Gallery is
presenting a selection of some of the most
interesting and important pieces that have entered
the collection — and thus have been given to the
whole community — over the course of the last three
years.
This exhibition focuses on the work of European and
American artists from the Renaissance to the present
and is made up of some 90 paintings, prints,
watercolors, drawings, and sculptures.
Although some of them are frequently on view, many,
particularly the prints, have seldom been seen
publicly, and they have never before been shown
as a group.
The paintings in this exhibition range from the 16th
century Portrait of a Boy of the Bracciforte Family by
the Italian painter Niccolo dell'Abbate to two 1970s
paintings by the Americans Wayne Thiebaud and
Kathy Calderwood. Among other artists represented
are Thomas Gainsborough, Francesco Solimena,
Frederick Duveneck, Martin Johnson Heade, and the
poet e. e. cummings.
Drawings by Goya, Burne-Jones, Albert Pinkham
Ryder, David Hockney, and Sol Lewitt are also
among the works presented, as are sculptures by
Rodin and David Smith. Prints include selections
from the group of Old Master prints presented by an
anonymous donor (among them works by
Rembrandt, Tintoretto, and Van Gogh) and from the
Penney Collection of contemporary prints (by Josef
Albers, Jackson Pollock, and John Marin, among
others).
