About this collection

Founded in 1870, Canisius College is one of 28 Jesuit colleges and universities in the nation. It is a private four-year university in Buffalo, New York. Canisius offers more than 70 majors, minors and special programs leading to bachelor and masters degrees through the College of Arts & Sciences, the Richard J. Wehle School of Business, and the School of Education and Human Services. Canisius provides many options for career preparation or higher-level educational pursuits.

Canisius College is a member of the Western New York Library Resources Council (WNYLRC).

Buildings History and Maintenance

Canisius College has been located on three different campuses since its founding in 1870. This collection documents the construction and expansion of the College.

 

Canisius Presidents

This collection contains photos of all Canisius' presidents from its first, Rev. William Becker, S.J. through John J. Hurley, J.D. who has the distinction of being the first lay president.

 

Coaches and Sports

This collection highlights coaches, teams, individual athletes, and a variety of sports memorabilia including programs and tickets.

World War II Scrapbook, August 1942-April 1946

Compiled by Canisius’ first archivist, Rev. J. Clayton Murrary, S.J., this scrapbook represents a small portion an enormous effort by Father Murray to maintain contact with Canisians, as well as keep track of their service records throughout World War II. An Index of individual’s names and pages upon which articles about them appear, is located prior the newspaper clippings. This PDF document, filmed from microfilm, is not keyword searchable. 

 

Church Records

St. Mary of the Assumption R.C. Church (a k.a. St. Mary’s on the Hill,1847-1909) Lancaster, NY - Throughout the 1970s and into the late 1980s Canisius College assisted in the preservation of hundreds of church records and ledgers documenting the history of churches, cemeteries and faithful residents of the western, central and northern NY,  southern Ontario and northwestern Pennsylvania. A complete list of records is available through Canisius College Archives. Currently, this is the ONLY digitized group of records. Reformatting effort will continue as funding becomes available. The Griffin

The Griffin has been Canisius College's student newspaper since 1933.

 

The Canisian

The Canisian was the first official student newspaper of Canisius College, and ran until 1933. These digitized papers represent all known issues of The Canisian to exist; most are in very fragile condition.
