printed
about
1838
, on
one
folio
sheet
, the
artist
and the
lithographer
not
being
named
. The
block
is
on the
east
side
of
Main
St.
,
extending
north
from
Perry
store
fronts
.
It
consists
of
seventeen
brick
stores
,
all
alike
,
four
stories
high
.
It
was
built
in
1835
by
Benjamin
Rathbun
in
ninety
days
'
time
, for
Joy
&
Webster
, at a
cost
of
over
$100,000
. The
stores
were
numbered
1-17
from
Perry
St
. and were
occupied
mostly
by
wholesale
business
and
jobbing
houses
. The
block
is
typical
of the
inartistic
character
of the
buildings
of that
period
. The
first
story
may
be
described
as of
stone
, in that the
front
consisted
of
52
plain
,
square
,
stone
pillars
(monoliths)
,
each
fifteen
ins
. in
width
and
so
placed
that
each
store
was
faced
by
two
whole
and
two
half
pillars
. These
pillars
(now
mostly
supplanted
by
iron
posts)
were
surmounted
by
simple
square
Doric
capitals
,
which
were
topped
by the
wide
stone
entablature
with its
plain
square
cornice
,
masuring

7

. in
all
. The
three
upper
stories
are of
brick
,
plain
laid
,
each
story
having
a
row
of
fifty-one
rectangular
window
openings
,
capped
by
plain
,
wide
stone
lintels
,
set
flush
. The
roof
is
low
gabled
,
sloping
away
from the
street
.
It
seems
incredible
, but
is
a
fact
, that
lower
Main
St
.
is
still
(1932)
largely
encumbered
by
survivals
of this

usualy
crammed
with
guests
. The

were
piled
in

daily
, '

'
literally
and
