Description	Formal portrait of soldier who served in a New York state military unit during the Civil War. Photograph shows man sitting, half-length, in civilian attire. Photo is cut circularly to mimic vignette style and pasted onto a mat. Numbers on the front of some photographs refer to an index no longer extant. At one point, most of these photographs were tacked to the wall of the State Capital building in Albany, New York.

Y., in 1840. He was graduated at the U. S. military academy in 1861, was promoted 1st lieutenant in the 1st artillery, May 17, 1861, and upon the capture of Capt. James B. Ricketts at Bull Run, succeeded to the command of his battery. He was engaged with the battery throughout the Peninsular and Maryland campaigns, on the march to Falmouth and in the battles of Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. He was mortally wounded at Chancellorsville, May 3, 1863, and was taken to Washington, where he died, May 23, 1863. For his gallantry in the battle in which he received his death wound he was given on his death- bed a commission as brigadier-general of volunteers, to date from the day of his death.
