GLEANER APPOINTS
NEW EDITORS
Co-editol"S Louise DeNeve and Nora Hickey have
announe«\ 1I'e appointment of the new editor of the
GLEANER. Sophomore Kathy Dwyer received the appoint_
ment as a result of an ed itorial consultation and a staff
election held the week befo re EASter vacation. Kathy will
nOW serVe as the editor of the Nuareth college newspaper
from the issue that ~amc out April 17 until Sprinjf. 1971.
"Such a term of edi tol'llhip from Spring to Sprinjf." the
retirinjf editors explained. ""'M initiated two years ago
wi th the intention of allowing the newly appointed editor
an opportuni ty to publish two or three ed ition~ under the
guidance of her foreru nners." In this way the editor is able
to initiate new ideas and at the !;arne time benefit from the
mistakes and achievements of the past staff. One such mistake
this year caused the decision to rdurn to the policy
of having one ed itor and several assistant editon rather
than c<>-editors.
Silll'e Kathy's apJlOintment, the GLEANER ha... gained

LET'S GET 80TtI SIDES-NOW
When one attempts to meet a ~ituetion objectively.
there is always involved the risk of seeing both s ides. This
type of vision often bring" painful glare to one'3 eyes and
tempt3 the viewer to choose oblivion Or total blindness as
a lut recourse. However. aince th ill temptation is only
momentary and the SCene before us is a long-lasting one.
one endures and in the strle of the Sophoclean hero and
challenges the situation around him .
As a logical prerequisite one might seek w define the
l roubles<>me s ituation before any challe"ges are made. despite
the fact. that even the mO/lt elOquent rhetoric proves
inadequate. So in very plain and ingenuous langu age let us
ask ourselves some questions:
lias t he · · c r ~a·t i .·~ ~ p i r it" · al Nazarelh
College met "'ilh an un timely deat h!
If thi" "spiritus" hu been removed trom
our midst-who was its deliverer?
Why are somc who proclaim its death reluctant
to speak of the illness and/or
death of creative spirit?
Why do they refuse to let us give it its
proller funeral? (That ill of coul'lle if
creative spirit at Nazareth Is no longer
among the living.)
I'<lore s peCifically why wel'e onll' a hand_
ful ot girls present at nominations for
UndefllTad elections which in result hOO
to be delayed a w«k!
Why did the theme of Earth-Day at
Na:zareth College become "Now Not TomorroW---<
lr tomorrow or tomorrow Or
wherever this petty pace of life giv,"" me
a CUe 1 lih?"
If there are any more "viewers" and concomitant
<:hallengers in our midst-jIOSSibly you can try to answer
aome of tltese questionll.
If there is a ··silent majoril)'" at Na,areth who still
believe thia "creative spiri t" is somewhere-alive and well
~beeome articulate and tell us where!
Orten our silent majority sal'S too much and gives
false impreuions w observers by saying too little.
By the was. the Gleaner doell have an o1lice----Gyrnnasium
West-it operates 0" spirilla) and your money.
To thos.! who may feel inclined to tesJlOnd may I suggest
that rou emulate the turtle-to go places you must
stick out your neck! '.d

Comprehensive
Examinations:
Value Disputed
by ~:Iaint Milt<!
The ComprehMsive (,;xamimtHono have ended and the
SeniOTS are hack lo no""at at least for a little while. The
tension and anxiety conneded wilh preparing for Comll$
has been dl"'reased and div~rted lo other matters of impor·
tance. The following- comments. however. weN made by
variou, sludents:
'"They do not achieve their purpose."
"'Comps should nol be requ isite for graduation.
"'TI'ey a'e not fair since the requirements for each department
i$ differeot.'·
Although the g-eneral student opinion is ambivalent
toward Comps. it leans more toward the negative side.
Theorelically. the Comprehensive examination is designed
to gi ve a nl"'essary intelleclual growth experience through
synthesizing the knowledge of one's major field. It is said
that the preparation for this examination is as valuable ""
the exam itself. mainly due to the wide '·ariety of material
covered in preparation.
It is on this point. however. that there is the most disagreement.
A speech major felt that they are a waste of
Hn'e because the accumulation of knowledge necessar)· for
the Comps had been already questioned previous to Senior
year. SO t here "'Ill! no ehalleng>'. She felt il WM just
"busy work." Ewn prepared questions do not really test
the student, just her ability to memorize .
An English maior felt that lhere wa.s too much pressure
put on the students since Comp. were necessary for
graduation. It adds to student anxiety because they have
to concentrale on Comps and, therefore, get behind in the
rest of t heir courses.
Many feel lhat this syslem of Comps are antiquated
and Nazareth is among a "",all percentage of .'I<:hoola that
sti ll make t hen' compulsor)·. It is also possible for a student
to cram as for an)· other test and achieve a good mark.
e,'en though she may ha ve .Iacked--off all year-or all 4
YUTS.
The dehate on the value of Compo will inev itably oon.
tinue, but it would IU!em that the "powers that be" will win
out again.

Calendar
Discussed or
Disgusted
MOY 14, 1970
'!'his year Is almost o,'er and It seems to be an appropri.
ate point for a summary on an issue whicb bas oc.:upied not
only the belter part of this year, but of other pre<'tding
years as well. In September a few students from Fisher approached
a few 8tudenta from Na~arelh asking Ihat we begin
a joinl venture to make some sort of calendar ch.ange for
the 197(1.71 school year. What happened between September
and May Is past bistury and it Is apparent 10 most people by
now just what exactly transpired during Ihat lime. For the
unlnfonned. the facts are, that we lried to change the calen.
dar, we tried tbrough student pulls and student roferendums,
through curriculum committee discussions and conferencell
and correspondence with othe, IO:hools using the type of
change we boped to implement. For awhile, in frustration
o,'er the amounl of time and effo;>rt which seemed had heen
uselessly exercised because the calendar was looking like a
dying cause. we eVen tried to;> change under the threat
of a $Iudent strike. Now, you'd think that after all this, the
end of the story would be thaI after such trials and tribulations
the calendar was filially changed and that Nazarnth and
SI. John Fisher colleges lived under il happily ever after
.. Not so,. . the calendar is not going to change after all
for 1970-71.
The fault cannot be.said 10 lie with one person or a few
persons, but with us all. In late April the Student ll<;Iard at
!'isher voted against any change In calendar for the 19'10-
71 IO:hool year, looking to 1911·72 and a romplete calendar
change including a C"Urriculum change as well. They did this
for reasons which can be6I. be described by themselves. For
Nazareth, in an effort to preserve order In the cooperative
program (whicb ironically ha$ been greatly cuI back accord·
ing 10 a r""ent statemenl made by f'ishe r's President. Falher
Lavery Ihe feeling after the Fisher d""ision was 10 forego
any immediate change for the type of change hoped {o, by
Fisher. The decision was not only the result of the Fisher
decision, but was also made. it .seems, in view of the expanded
cooperation beginnIng Wilh the University of' Rochester and
Brockport; both of these institutions oper.ate on oW" present
calendar. Ultimately, I suppose It can be said that we failed
because of differe nt goals which we", nol rompletely understood
by one or more of the parties concerned, because we
tried 10 please all of the people, all of the time, which Abra,
ham Lincoln has told uS is somelbing which man can neve,
do, because of mistakes in procedure which Were made because
we dldn't know better and because of waning interest
in a cause that was simply talked to death.
lVe're very SOt"lj' for tbe trouble and frustration and disillusionment
suffered by those who Were involved and Inter·
ested in the issue, Work has begun again. however, and an·
other C(lmmillee Is underway. hoping to change the calendar
and the curriculum by December of 1970 for implementa·
tion during 1971·72. We wish lutk to the ncw committee and
sincerely bope. that in this Instance, history does not repeat
ilgelf.
