Sin~ I was a freshman, four years ago, many
improvements have ~ made: the number of
students has increased: cerlain academic programs,
both undergraduate and graduale. have been ~ended:
• major in Computer Science ..... been created. as well
as the installation of numerous computer ienni""la in
Kurney and Smyth Hall.: th~ renovation 0/
donnitories, including new furnishings and new

establishment 0/. new security .y.t~m in dormitories;
the addition 01 the Gerald G, Wilmol Hall 0/ Music,
complete with hrilliant pipe organ; major re.urfacing 01
th~ .wimming pool floor; initiation of women"!IOCCf:r

well as the construction 01 an oIfice for the coach;
reJlOVation 01 the storage .rea for the team room for
women's "ports: construction of two more athletic

painting of lhe gazebo at the courts; the painting of the
gym; the resurfacing and relining of the gym noor; the
initlotion of women's softholl to be played this spring:
and, last but nQt least, a newly installed ice-skating
rink.
Impressive, isn'l il. Oh, of course progreso has been
made in other areas .uch a. the appointments of
coordinators in certain academic areas, and Ihe
renovation of the Undergraduate Association Office
and the Senate Room. There have also been
advaneements in the are .. of organi .... tion,
accreditations, Conlinuing Education, Summer
Session., recruitment procedures, admis.ion.,
investmenlO. and SO on. But mo.t of these
improvements are more structural and internal than
the others. which are. for the most part. fairly evident.
As you can~. many significant benefits have been
added to thl$ collCll,e. A Rood number of them are
concentrated in the area of athletics. There'. DO dOllbt
that :s.ome of the reJlOVations were needed, not only for
the safety of our "hle te •. but also to provide them with
thai competitive "oedge" needed to win.
Having that "edge" can make a ll the difference. [t'.
particularly important in one'seducation. Yet. if this i,
so, why d0e5 it often acem that so many other things
lake precedence?
I am not implying lhal "",hj,,& has been do"" in
regards to educational need., nor am I unaware of the
many thlngs thailla .... been done. Of COUrse significant
benefits have been added. Bul let's face ii-it'. not a
privilege tocxpend and maintain, it' •• necessity/If this
institution wants to compete in the fight for college·
bound students, then it's obvious that it must exlend
itself 10 attract a number of varied interests, I think
everyone could understand thaI. But I'm not SO sure
that people can understand why certain obvious needs
alway. ~m 10 go "unnoticed."
Let's lake, for example, the case of Financial Aid.
Although this isa monetary isoue, itl$still the m""ns to
an end-education.
A good many students at Nazareth depend on some
:s.ort of financlol assistance for their education. Yet, at
the start of every semester. students are often left 10
wonder if they will be able to continue here or if H:ey
will be forced to transfer to a less e><pensive college.
While it is true that the State and Federal governments
delermine the amount of money that is allotted to
students, it i. also true that Nazareth is not without it.
share of "power." Although the college consistently
closes cach fiscal year "in the black," many studcnts
are left "in the red" all because of "the green:' It is
frustrating for these student. 10 be told thai they cannot
have money for their education while, at the .. me time,
there is money enough to spendon "e.;tras:· It appears
that there may be :s.ome confUSion among priorities.
Now let's lalk about the Ubrary. Believe it or not,
many people choo$e theircolleg<Odepending upon how
resou=ful the institution', library is. Why? Because
thi.lsone of the most important factors in ANYONE'S
educalion. And, rather than benefitting a select group,
it is the one facility that ALL people share. regardte.sof
their major or outside interesis. For this .. me reason
our library .hould have extensive coverage of """'l'
subject, with the latest periodicals and textbooks
available in all fields. Asstatl!d in the course description
booklet, NllMfeth's library "'is ranked among tM lop
five comparable New York State college libraries in
relation to number of volumes." l1l.aI'. gr",,1. But how
many 01 these volumes are up-to-date with the latest
happ.mings in a particular field?
From whall understsnd, a certain amount of money
Is allotted to each department and 1M professors
submit titles that Ihey would like the library to buy. Yet
sludents are still travehng toother area colleges for the
bulk of data needed for class projects. And, despite the
expan.ion of the media setvines, there are still
complaints about the choice of materials. The reason
could be one of two things: either the students are
mot(IJt$, or there is a severe lack of communication
here. I opt for the latter. But perhaps we can help each
other out Why nne include, at the end of the Teacher
Evaluation fonos, a question asking the students what
is their particular interest in the field they are studying,
and what textbooks/periodicals concernin& this u""
would they like 10 ace in the library that are nne
currently there. We could at least give it a try.
I have spoken of only two issues_ But there are mOre.
I believe there are reasons for everything that is done.
In fact, the reason, why Financial Aid ,tudents do not
get the money they need , and the library ~ms to lack
what the student. seem to want, might actually be
son.ewhat valid. The problem is lhat WE OON.
KNOW WHAT THESE REASONS ARE!! Rather
than being infonned and upclated On whal is·-and is nne·
·being done , and WHY this is SO. we are of len given the
run-around, and, what's worse, pacified. What other
choice do we have but to create reasons of OUr own.
Jl'IQ$t of which are based on what we SEI!?!
Students have every right to know what their money
is being used for and why, and who makes the
decisions, for not every decision made l$done to benefit
this comn.unity "" a whole. It', a lways the same lines
who ~m to benefit the mOSI_
I think it'. time lor fair play.
