Most art ezhibitions consist of
art work displ8yed in I gallery.
From now until March 21 th~
Little Callery in the N~eth
Arts Cenler will beCome a p;ece
of work in itself.
Michael Riley, • free lance ar·
tist whose works have appeared
in Chicago. Minneapolis. and
P.ocbester, has ~ the walls
. from ceiliOi to floor . with
paper in order to crute I sir:·
sided mUfSl entitled "floatfall:'
The Space Shuttle ChaUengcr
di5aster provided most of the in·
spir.tion for the work.
"F!oatlall" is a kind 0/ art
work commonly referred to as
an '"installation" piece. N:oor'
ding to Riley an installation is a
work lhat uses .space in a per·
vious manne r. The space
becomes an integral part of the
work. The mufSLs on the wau
and the dcaign On the Iloor
chang~!he shape at the room.
This was Rileys flJ'S\ installation
pica.. The necessary prepara'
lion and planning look him two
weeks; tbe actual work took rum
onlY two days.
There are many aspects of
Riley's work that need to be
coO$idcred. Th~ include the
ohapes he used. the choi« of
oolors. and what he hopes to
achieve by the display.
"Ib begin with. he has 001·
le<:ted many shapes. He com·
pares the way he decoo what
shapes to use with shopping.
"Once you hove an idea, you
begin looking. One thing may
strike you and then another.
Your eyes must be open. and
your mind. thinkins_'"
Many of the shapes Riley uses
have very diffe rent meanings
behind them. So ..... hapes ""'
abotract. while others are more
spedfic. He uses many
met.phors in his work.
Riley's choice 01 colors is also
important. He . lmost always
uses ooIors in the range 01 black.
red. white. and sometim ... purple.
He believes these colon are
aymhoUc and have many con·
ntalions. White: and black sym.
bolize right and wrOflJl and
positive and negative; red, on
the other hand. can symboli:oe
life or death. Using these colon
helps him create the atmosphere
be wanta.
Riley want. people to think
about the Space Shuttle tfllJledy.
He wants to confu"", people
upon entering the room.
"Pbysically you are looking at
the wall. but tM floor divides
our attention;' SlYs the .nist.
The pwpose of this is to create
,n uneasy feeling in the
onlooker. The room should
bring oul the emotions !he
viewer felt when the tfllJledy (ICoo
curred. The shuttle IfSgedy af·
fected everyone; he hopes he
has involved many e motions in·
10 the piece.
Riley graduated from
Nazareth in 1980 with a B.s. in
Studio Arts, and from the
Universityof Minnesot.ain 1984
with a MFA in Studio Arts. His
installation is on display Monday
through Friday from 8:30
