Nazareth Prepares for 'Expansion '89'
By Steve McCaffrey
Getting a parking spot at Nazareth isn't as
bad as some people make it out to be. Getting
a block of time in the gymnasium for
recreational activity is.
On May 15th, this predicament will be
reversed. More specificall y, at a cost of over
$4 million, simultaneous expansion of The
Otto A. Shults Community Center and
Smyth Hall will officially begin. Hence, the
problem of parking will soon get worse and
the lack of gym space will soon be remedied.
This expansion, which bas been in the
discussion and planning stages for nearly
five years, comes as a result of an increasingneed
for physical space on campus, both
in tenns of academic and recreational space.
Smyth Hall Expansion
As it stands now, Smyth Hall acoomodates
nearly every academic and administrative
function on campus with the exception of the
Art, Music, and Psychology departments.
Consequently, as the number of students
enrolled at Nazareth has increased nearly
threefold since 1976, and the faculty by over
twenty, the need for expansion of the existing
physical plant is, in the words of some, "~abo
solutely critical." 0 E1I:pansion '89 - Page 4
