Organic food vs. Regular brand ... Can you tell the difference?
HEATHER ZULAUF
Staff Writer
Gleaner stalTers decided \0 sec if there is a taste
difference between organic and nO/1-organic foods . We tested
six types offavorile student foods: chocolate milk, cheese
doodles. cheese slices, juice. cookies and chips.
1. Wegmans Chocolate Milk vs. Silk Chocolate Milk
2. Wegmans Cheese Doodles VS. Orguic brand
3. Orens VS. Newman-O's
4. Wegmans American cheese slice~ vs. Vegan cheese slices
5. Tropic.fia Juice vs. Gr«n Veggie Juice
6. Lays plain potato ch ips VI. Terra Sweet potato chips
The n'~ult.'l of the blindfolded tas te test were a5 follows:
Our eight "experlS" could lel100l only that there was indeed
a significant difference between the foods but could al$O
distinguish the regular brands from the organic brands.
C hipS: Six people enjoyed Ihe regular brand of chips as
opposed to the organic brand. while two people favored the
organic.
Juice: Just two people enjoyed the "green organicjuice,"
while the other six liked the pink Tropicana j uice. Some of the
responses about the organic juice were:
"It was so good!" -Chelsey Wentwonh
"I I::an't believe I liked the green juice." -Chelsey Wentwonh
"Smells organic ..... - Maria Helz
"11 bums!" - Maria Hetz
"Nasty Green Jui<:e." - Maria Hetz
"It looks like sludge." - lames Hallahan
Cheese Doodles: All eight experts chose the regular Wegmans
brand cheese doodles. Some comments about the organic were:
"Crunchy air, not as cheesy." - Maria Hetz
"Smells weird." - James Hallahan
C ookies: Three people liked Paul Newman's
cookies. while five others stuck with the original
Oreos. Some commcnts were:
"I can reel the difference in the texture." - Maria
Ho<>
''The organic ones are less sweet then the original
ones."' - Rachel
"The Newman-O's taste like cardboard."
-Chelsey Wentwonh
Cheese s lices: Two people enjoyed the Vegan slices. while the
other six preferred the Wegmans brand. Most said that the Vegan
cheese was bland.
C hocolate Milk: Only two people chose the regular milk,
while Silk soymilk pulled offa surprise win. About Silk:
"[t tastes like a mi[kshake" - James Hallahan
No report on how many of the eight had dinner that evening. As
for cos!. most of the brands were within 50 cents of each other.
with the juice having the largest price difference.
Trying new foods is always fun . do it yourself -- you might be s.uprised at what you end up liking!1
