Can students really survive at Naz without their own computers?
Eva VN DESANTIS

Whal was everyone's

antlclpalion of rreshmen year
of college? Surely il is nOI the
expensive lexlbooks, nor even the
dorm room decor: il is the com pUler
tJ,al is the big ticket item . While
on some college campuses it is
impossible 10 funelion Wltll()Ut your

abundance of corn pUlers for srudenl
usc in various localion5, However,
to tllose who own a compuler:
stop and tI.ink for a minute how
your life at Naz would be di Werent

hello one million flash dri ves 10

Is life al Naz really possible
withoul a compule'r or your own?
The general verdict among
NaLaJ'etJ, students seems to be
thai you could survive on this
campu.~ wilhout having your 0"'''
computer, rhough il may have
somc inconveniences. Along
with personal preference, there
are several factors 10 consider
when deciding whC~lcr or nOI you
eO\lld function withoul a personal
computer. One of the biggest faelors
10 conSider is winch residence
hall you call home. Kearney and
Clocktower Commons come fully
equipped with com pulers 8lld
printers available 24n. However,
tI,o<e residing in Founders, the
French House, Lourdes, O'Connor,
Gcorge, Lyons, Breen. and Porlka
are not so lucky. For some, tile
computer labs, tile library, and
Smytl"s 2-t hour lab are bUI a
short jaunl from their room, Yet
for others making this journey 10
type thaI Engl ish paper or evcn
JUSl to check e-maiJs may be 100
much of a hassle on a daily basis.
Witl,oul your own computer, the
spaces in which you engage in
your work are very limited. In<lead
of sining comfortably in bed or 31
your dcsk atlWo in the morning to
crank out !halessay you'd forgonen
abollt, you would find yourself
alone of the labs, which are not
exactly designed with wmfon in
mind. Availability of computers
in these labs is an added slress for
laptop-lacking students, At certain
times, cvery compuler in Ihe library
is Iaken: and the same Can be said
for the the other labs. In addition,
wltile many of the compUler labs
on campus operate 24/7, the library
has specific hours of operation that
can be severly limiting. If this were
your only option for wmpUler
access, your homework schedule
wouJd basically be decidc<l for you.
Looking al the amount of com pUler
access demanded by cenain majors,
and srudents' personal work
preferences can also give insighl
as to whcther or not II is possible
to survive at Naz without one's
own compUler, Students of diverse
majors agreed thai more often thJrn
nol, they find themselves quite
dependent on tlleir personal laptop
for complelion of their homcwork.
As a communications and rhclorie
major, I am conslanlly Iypmg
pap"rs on my laptop and couldn'l
imagine life without it. According
to SQphomore an major Dan Ryan,
huving u personal compuler is
impernlive 10 the success of his
graphic design work , However.
according to Ryan, those simply
focusing on drawing and painting
do nOl alw:\ys need a compuler.
SenIor malh major Kail Gesoedi
stales that sometimes she has to
bring her laptop 10 classes in order
10 panicipale in the lectures. While
tllesc majors do not generally focus
on essay wriling, there arc many
olher compulCf programs which
srudenls mUSI use in their learning
process, Sophomore Physical
Therapy major, John Russo admits
tJ,al he could see himseifwithoul his
persollal compuler. "A II I really us~

do in the com pUler lab," hc states,
Compared 10 other schools, Naz
is an eXlremely computer fuendly

whetllcr concerning work or

computer appears to be a common
Iteod here all camplK Some
would even consider it a necessily_
depending on their major or
housing assignment. So, could you
survive al Naz withoul a laplop
if you really had to? Absolutely.
Would il be inconvenienl 10 go
