but these lines apUy describe my fi,."t
impres~ ion of the I. test Jot..,1l MusiCAle.
"Hold On To Your HaLo"-with its
balta lion of beauliful girls, riotously comic humor. many
song and dance numbers 3nd multi-hued coslumes and seltings-
at once slrikes tbe audience a8 being parlicularly
delightful. AI Joison proved to be his old charming self, informally
addl'essing Il,e audience at intervRl~ in the show,
Finally breaking out into such songs GS "Mammy," "SOtUly
Boy." and "SwIlnee.," he hit a nostnlgic note for those in
the audience who could remember "when"-"in the good
old daylS."
The plot is concerned with a radio co'~boy hero, "The
Lone R;dcy," who becomes involved wjth " daIY.v bunch of
dude-rnnchers. who persuade him to go out west tl} caplllre
a notorious bandit,
However, there seemed to be quite a bit oC "kidding
around" and ad Jibbing, that might have added in making
the humor seem more spontaneous; but in another way the
romanH~ horseplay seemed to be II triOe vulgar at time..
- and it was done with a little too much :!est.
The whole show, howeyer. was good. but jugt thator
so It seemed t<> this inexperienced critic. Jolson '~as the
same. vibrant, dynamic. charming comedian. Aside (rom
the star. "1.hmie"-the petite el}l1ledianne, Collette Lyon",
acted her clever part well, 8n(1 "Concho"-played by Hermall
Tirnberrr. Jr., I think. "stole the show," IDs epecialty
dnnce received more applause from the appreciative aUdience
than any fealure presenled, With tbe e.."<ception of
these mentioned, Jolson was not 00 ,qell supported u he
might have been.
Aside frolll the obvious weak spots in the enlire performance
the MlI.icale WaS delightful and enjoynble in a
rip-roBrLng sort of wa.y.
And now. the public is awa.iting the comedy success,
"Life With Father:' which will be played br n seasoned

!;'':'"",. Armistice Day, 1941 ; A MESSAGE TO STUDEN'.(' AMERICA:
As Anni.<Hce Day. 1941. approaches. the campus is considering
the appropriate form of obsel-vil1g this occaaion.
To lhe millions who in 1918 celebrated the first Armistice Day, it
meant the end of a long, bitler struggle and the beginning of a new and
belter "ra.
After 21 year:! we are observing A,·mistice Day in the midst of a
new and mOre terrible war. the r esult of homanitv'. failure to utilize
the opportunities preseMed by the peace of Ve;·sailles. As we. the
American people, now lake up the grim I.ask of mobilizing all oUr u·
source. for defense . \Ve must also make sure that we shall not lose the
nexl peace.
The charade!" of lhe peace that "'ill come out of this war will in
part be determined by the degree to which stalesmen a'·e supported
by a m"IUl·e and inC"'·med pUblic opinion. Colleges can take leade"hip
in diffusing infonn"tion and stimulat.ing int erestll'l. the problems inherent
in l)uilding a bett...r world . Certainly. th" student body with its asso.
dates evel·ywhere, whether in the armed forces. on the farm or in the
factory. who will inherit the po~t-\\'ar \vorld, have a rigM and responsi.
bllity to conceTO themselves with this Issue.
The Uniled States Committee of lnlernational Student Service,
thorefore, urges that on November lith. classroom discussions and
Armistice Day e>:ercises be organized around the t.heme of peace aims
and post-wIlr reconstrudion.
The (oremost questions to be considered are:
I. Wh"t stake does the United States ha~ e in the peace lhat will
f(\lIow the war ~

We could make lhis Annis!ice nay an occuion for mounling over
