THE TRUE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT
By Lll,A JEAN HEGLE
God rest you mel'l'y gentlemen, let nothing you dismay
Rememl>er, Christ our Saviour was 1Jorn on Christmas d:ty.
In the words of one of our oldest and best loved carols
we a •·e reminded of the true spirit of Christmas.
It is an actual fact that Christ was hnrn on ChristmM
day. Hud He not been born, ther~ would be no Chri8tmas.
But He waij l~tll'll ove1· nineteen hundred yenrs ago, and it
is nl"o a fact. lamentable but actual, that with the pali<Sing
of lime, Christmas has lost much of its original !!llcred significance
in the minds and hearts of its celebrants.
Decembc•· twenty-fifth has come to mean holly and
mistletoe; fir h·ees and tins~ I; tu•·key dinners and peppermint
candy: partie:~ and "Fom· Roses;" gift>~ and greeting
cards; and little else.
Much lime and attention will be devoted to the selection
of thnt tic which will bCllt blend with Jncl<'o new blue
suit: that dt>ll which will most please little Mary; and that
pe1·fumc which will most effectively enhance Carol's personality.
Mothel· will select with meticulous care the turkey,
vegetables, and other cdiblus which will grace her table
thrnughnut the holiday•season.
Father will have to decide if the tree this year should
l1ave ornaments and a multicolored lighting efl'ect, or a
spru~·ing of white paint set off with solid blue lights.
That gown ytlu'll wear to the formal Christmas night
will have to he something strictly "out of this world." Jack
might come through with a white orchid.
You ha vc at least a hundred people to whom you must
send Christmns Cnl'(ls, and you still can't decide whether
you want the pink ones with the blue scotty dogs or the
green ones with the red reindeer.
Oh my. the1·e's just no denying the fact that the Christmat<
season i• the busiest and most hectic of the year. You
~carcely ha,•e lime to do all the things that simply must be
dune!
Now. just (or an hour, stop I Climb into your coat and
stadium hoots and we'll t.'lke a slow walk at·ound the block.
IL'• about ~even in the evening, da•·k and ttuict. YouJ' hoot.~
make no sound ail they move through the deep snow covering
I he walks. lt's i!till snowing a litlle and you'llnotice, if
,vnu look about, that the streetlights lend a sparkling beaut~
· t<> the l>UI't! whiteneR~ of trees 1111d bushes.
'!'his i~ about the hour when most of your neighbors
nre j ust finishing their dinner, so you can be reasonably
sure thal your meditation will proceed undisturl!cd. That
iw why we are taking this quiet walk, you know. We have
some tall medi!aling to do.
Fil'l!t, crowd into the dark recesses ol you•· mind all
tho$e terribly important thlngs you must do with only
eighteen shop1)ing days left till Christmas.
Nllw, raise your eyes and take a good long look at
those stars. They've been there for a long time. They were
there abo\lt nineteen hundred years ago on a certain holy
night the night which is indit·ectly responsible for your
present slate of confusion.
And now, ask yoursel( this pertinent question: "Am
I prepared in the ~t•·ictest interpretation oi the word, for
l'hristmas day?"
We will here declare a five minute pause. At least five
minute~ nre necessary to a thoughtful consideration of this
ttu~slion. Because, by lhe "strictest iuterprctation" of the
wot•d "prepl\red" T mean1 "Ate you prepared to celebn:\te
wilh Christ, as He would wish it, His birthday?''
When you buy those gifts, do you remember that that
''t •m originated with th1·ee wise men and not with Sanl'l
('lau•?
D·> you •·eftect on the cause for your light-hearted
" :t)'ety at this time of the year above all others? You are
'•lPPY berause Jesus Christ assumed human form, thereby
!•ringing about the sah•ation of mankind. On that night in
al;le at Bethlehem. the light and hope of the world was
horn! Everyone was unspeakably happy, and your happiness
in 1945 should be uo less great than was theirs in the
~·en•· l.
It is natural to manifest boundless joy by means of
celebration. That is why we enjoy a Christmas least and
decorative array.
Misery and joy have company, We want our friends
to share our feeling of joy so we send them a greetinga
Christmas card in which we co1wey our sincere desire
that they too, will join us in celebrating the blessed occasion
of Christmas.
I find extremely amusing, the outward expressions
of joy and !utile celebt·ation at Christmas, of those who
pr ofess absolute disbelief in the existence of Jesus Christ.
THE GLEANER
Well, you're back at your own home again. We hope
you've enjo~·cd your hom· of meditation. We hope you'll
carry the fndt~ of this quiet walk, through ~·ou•· life. Above
all we hope your Christmas will have a deeper, more beaut
iful "ignificanre now.
Tncidcntally, there were no ~cotty-dog~ in that ~tat,)~

IMPRESSIONS
By MARION R. GROSSER
If first impre:<.~ions should necessarily be lasting, few
people who knew that Christ wns the son of a simple carpenter
and his wife Mary, and that he was horn in a cave,
would ha\'e paid much attention to him. E\•en a first impression
of him gained many yea1'!1 laler as an exceptionally
fine man who went about living off the land and preaching
a t1uite astounding doch·ine would not have Rufficed to
make them realize that this man was the Son of God.
How much right we have to depend on the impressions
people give us at first meetings is based not only on
the honesty of that pe•·son, but also on the amount of tolerance
we possess. Few of us have these virtueR in sufficient
strength to depend on OUI' judgments very far. Think
of someone you know \'e•·y well. Now think of what you
thought of him or her when you first made his acquaintance.
You often wind up laughing at yourself, whether
~·ou'\•e been considering t he teacher who drew forth the
best you've yet given. the girl you b·ust with your most
secret thO\Ights, or the boy you fell in love with.
Aa we grow older, the art of discretion, and it is 8
b·ue art, begins to develop. But along with it should also
de,•elop a ce•·lain dish·uat in oul·$elves. Any student of a
subject realizes how Uttle he really knows about his course
of study. Any student of human nature is aware of how
much more there is to any person than what meets the eye.
Ask a social worker how far he trusts hi$ judgment of n
case before he visits Lhe subject's home.
Did you ever have to rush out on an enand in such a
hurry that you had to wear the oldest coat in your closet
because it was the only thing you could find? Maybe you
came sh·aight across the path of the hnndROme boy who
just moved in down the sb·eet, and wondered miserably
whnl he must have thought of you. You'll meei hund•·eds of
people as wonderful as yourself who, through shyness. or
hidden t •·oul>le, or fear of misunder~tsnding, or just plain
diffe•·ence from you, will greet you hastily clothed. That's
why there are so many more people worth knowing than
we realize. It's one of the messages of Christmas--the one
lime in the year when people carefully clothe their faces.
but more, let the light shine through.
