A. considerablt• number of Catholic College students {l
would not presume to venture a percentage) suffer from a spiritual
disease that may be described as "religious inarticulateness."
They are inarticulate nhout their faith. They arc unable to defend
their f<lith; they nre unable to C.\'J>Iain their faith and make it
attractive to others. They he«>me fearful and un<"asy when they
are asked questions about their faith.
What is even worse, thev :•re oftentimes inarticulntc with
Cod. Mental prn)•(•r is n sour~ of bewildc•·ment to them. They
Rnd it d ifficult to spend n few moments tnlkin!( with Cod.
It is inter~stinf( to note, however. that these same Catholic
college students. so inarticulate with others about their faith
and so inarticulate with CcKI in prnye r. nrc very capable of
expressing themseh·es in other matters. Just listen to him dcscrib·
ing the last Rochester Royals· basketball game: just listl'n to her
describing the dance she went to last night. 11l<'r<' is no Jack of
Rueney here. It is only in the things of Cod that their tongues
are tied.
How .are we to explain th is innrtic ula tcn<"ss nhout th<' things
of Cod? I should like to su~tgest three liut•s of thou!(ht that might
possibly point to an <'xplnnatiml.
1. T hey have never accepted wholeheartedly the obligation of
growing to maturity in their lmowledge of the faith. ~lost or
them h:we l)('en Catholics From the crndl<'. A~ children the\·
were given a hnsic fnnd of knowledge about tlwir faith, an~l
they have tlmwn on that fund ('\·er since. As they ha\'e grown
up, that fund of knowledge has wown wider hccansc of the
activity of someone else giving them more information, hnt it
has not g rown notohly deeper by activity n11 tlwir pnrt. To·
day they have n great deal more information about their
faith th:m tilt'}' hml as children. hut nnt much more real
knowledge.
2. They have never really hnd the efficacious desire to be ar.
ticulate. To desire au end efficaciously means to will the
means necessary to attain that encl. 11wy have ne,·er made
a practice of talking nhout their faith to onr another. When
someone on th~ out.~idc asks them n question they nrc simply
out of practice. They learn religion somewhat in the way
that they learn n foreign language. They 11rvcr make that
language n part of themselves. When someone wants to talk
that language to them, they Gnd it very difficult.
3. They hnve never accepted wholeheartedly the responsibility
of the lay apostolnte. They play at being nt~tles. 11•ey don't
make it a husiness. a career, a ,·ncntion. They don't share in
the thirst of Christ for souls. How often do they avoid tbe
topic of relig ion in conversation? How oftcon do they get
uneasy when oth<'rs he,::in to ask question~? How often do
they try tn iutroducc reli~tion into a t'(liWCI'Sntion, especially
when it is a conversation with somoone who needs re ligious
truth despcrnt~>ly? n ow many non-Catholics do they know?
How many of these non-Catholics have been hrou~tht closer
to Christ and lli< Church for having known them?
\Vhat do you think: Ts religious inarticulatenes.< a problem
among Catholic college students? If it is, what do you think is
the remedy for it? Pc•rhnp.~ the Cleaner would I)(' interested in
your ideas.

11m Gonna Change My Way of Living
So you want to do something different? Well, how about
a visit to the George Eastman house, now a Rochester museum
open to the public? At present 'The Columbia Story" is the latest
photographic exhibition being featured at the museum. Repre·
senting the combined work of 2:3 students of the photo workshop
of the University of Rochester's School of j ournalism, the pi.ch•re
stm·y will be on d isplay through March 31. And even if photog·
raphy isn't your prime interest in life, it still is intrigu ing to
wondc•· how those 78 moms were used before photography
became their major occupant.
Or a skip across East Avenue lands you on the steps of the
Rocheste•· Museum, where one may find infonnal ion, reference,
and believe it or not, loads of laughs.
And if th:it's not enough ...
For a glorious evening, why not a trip to the Eastman
Thcab·c, always a perfect hostess with a presentation to suit
every desil'c? 11•1arch 24, the Puccini Memorial Concert will be
presented featuring well lmown Metropolit~n opern stars, among
them Ezio Pinza.
Friday. March 31. Bach's "St. JVIatthcw's Passion·" will be
the feature pmcluction, conducted by Erich Lcinsdorf; the fen·
h•red soloist will be mezzo soprano Margaret Hershaw.
For the latest Broadway musical or smashing dramatic hit
of the season, the Auditorium offc1·s a wide selection of both.
And of course, the perennial favorites, such as "Blossom Time,''
"Student Prince," and "Song of Norway," can always be found
in the yearly schedule of presentations.
I'm even going to change the way I strut my sttJff ...
With the imminent approach of spri ng, a young girl's fancy
turns to thoughts of fashions-and what better way to turn than
toward a number of the style shows being presented in Rochester
by various and organi7A'\tions? Here a woman's mind may change
48 times before her Gnal decision and an exasperated sales clerk
is not the inevitable result.
My talk will be different ...
Because you'll be raving about that latest Victor Borge ,
album- the "clown pl'incc of the piano" pcrfom1ing in his inimitable
and thomughly enjoyable style. Through the medium of
comedy and satire, Mr. Borge introduces his audience to the
beloved themes of the great masters and the popular tunes ,
of today.
Or your conversation might be full of ta lk on the book, The
Vatican, with its beautiful illusb·ations and vivid descriptions- ~
so appropriate for this Holy Year. At least, if you can't go phy· '
sically to Rome, you can jottmey there via the pri nted work and
colored photographs-and it's so much cheaper toolll
