Even Santa Has Worries
FLORENCE DEL ROSSO, '52
"What to do? What to do? How can I go out around
the continent distributing all these brightly-wrapped gifts
next month? How can I go out with happiness in my heart?
Oh, Jo-Jo, you may clown about. but my conscience weighs
me down."
Jo-Jo, the crown t)l'ince of clowns in Santa Claus Town,
looked at Santa with alarm. "\\1lat makes you so sad? I've
never seen you without a smile or a hearty laugh. Sir, is
there any way I can help? It'll ne\·er· do for you to go about
looking unhappy when you are to spread happiness and cheer
by what you will bring all the cllildr·en on Christmas Eve.
Please tell me what's bothering you."
"Jo-Jo, do you realize what Christmas has come to?
Instead of rejoicing that Christ had come to redeem mankind
1.950 years ago, children eagerly run to the Christmas
tree to sec what Santa Claus has brought them. Do you
r·ealize that if Christ had not come, there would be no
Christmas?"
"But what can we do about it, Santa?" asked Jo-Jo,
looking ver·y ser·ious. Even he realized the tragedy that had
befallen Christmas.
"'l'he only thing I can think of is that first we must
pray. Then, when we go down the chimneys next month, we
can leave a story of the first Christmas, or a picture of the
Christ Child, or some significant r·eligious gift in each stocking,
along wiU1 the other gifts. Maybe that will help a
little."
"Surely. Santa, when people see that you are concer·ned
about their spiritual welfare and the honor and glory due to
' Christ at Christmas, they will stop commer·cializing Christmas,"
off<n·ed Sally Ann, the doll with the long golden curls.
"Yes, my little friends," said Stmta, "we must do all
we can to induce the people to 'give Christmas back to
Christ.'"
